Good To Grow: America in Bloom contestant Lewisburg overflows with flowers

JANE POWELL Courtesy photo Vibrant hanging baskets with flags in downtown Lewisburg are courtesy of gardeners in town willing to share their talents.In 1987, the Savannah Garden Club purchased the first wrought-iron baskets that would soon become a welcoming signature for the Lewisburg. You can’t miss them as you enter downtown and drive along Washington Street. The baskets, brimming with angel wing begonias, are beautiful, and they are just the beginning — flowers and blooms are everywhere.I have always felt walking around Lewisburg is a special experience — the history, the people and, oh, the landscaping that blends and continues throughout the city. With a little research, I realized this is because of a coordinated city-wide effort. Taking the lead from the begonias, the city has adopted a red-and-yellow color scheme and works with a local nursery to provide a list of plants that fall within this color palette.What started out as a small contribution to the city has grown to providing 76 flower baskets annually. Esther Simmons Parsons

Esther Simmons Parsons age 87 of Lewisburg, TN passed away on January 21, 2016, peacefully in her sleep after a short battle with cancer. Esther was born April 23, 1928, in Shawnee, Oklahoma and grew up in Limestone County near Athens, AL. Esther was preceded in death by her parents, Rufus and Vona Simmons; one brother, Allen David Simmons; three sisters, Etha Mae Simmons, Emma Jean Simmons, and Ella Wee Crane. Esther was a homemaker who enjoyed volunteering for many service organizations such as the March of Dimes, Red Cross and Easter Seals. She was a member of the Home Demonstration Club and the Old Car Club. After raising their two sons, Esther enjoyed her time working at Westhills Elementary School Cafeteria. Esther was a member of Church Street Church of Christ for 45 years. Sunday school, church service, and bible study was an important part of her life. Kayla Diane Bryanton

March 27, 1995, Kayla was the daughter of Tamara Bryanton and Marcus Canty. She was a very intelligent girl who graduated two years early from Lewisburg High School. At one point in her life, Kayla worked for the governor where she enjoyed motivational speaking. She was also an Advocate for mental health kids and abused women. She loved helping others and would do anything for anybody. Kayla loved being around people, whether that be her family or her friends. She was always the center of attention, making people laugh and have a good time. She enjoyed poetry, art, and music, as well as cooking for others and being outdoors. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her son: Elijah Bryanton; brother: Isaiah Bryanton of Columbia; sisters: Jasmine Bryanton, Chelsea Bryanton, Paris Bryanton, Madison Bryanton all of Columbia; and half-sister: Martisa Pierce of Spring Hill; niece: Amaya Childress; nephew: Jaxon Williams; aunts: Tatia Lockridge of Kansas City, MO, Sheena Canty of Columbia; uncle: Kyle Jones of Columbia; special friends: Darline Jaco and family, Susan Jaco and Crystal Hawks; foster parents: Terry &Sam Mills; God parents: Cooney &Edith Bills and family.
