Laura Lorraine Klahn, age 82, of Cottage Grove, passed away on Thursday, March 24, 2016, surrounded by her family. She was born on March 27, 1933, in Wautoma, Wis., the daughter of Fred L. Cox and Viola F. Cox.
Laura attended and graduated from Columbus High School in Columbus, Wis. She married Wilbur R. Klahn on March 29, 1952, and together they had two children. Laura was employed as a chemist at Badger Ordnance Ammunitions plant in Baraboo and University of Wisconsin Cancer Research Lab in Madison, co-owned ABC coffee business, was a saleswomen for AAA of Madison, and a realtor for both Badger Reality and Century 21 in Madison. She enjoyed many hobbies, including making crafts, decorating and design, landscaping and gardening, collecting antiques, and raising and selling raspberries. Laura loved birds, was an avid reader and loved to walk the beach.
Laura is survived by her husband, Wilbur; son, Michael L. Klahn; daughter, Cresent A. L'Sai (aka Lisa M. Klahn); sisters, Virginia (Merlyn) Dahl, Beverly Liebenthal, and Nancy (Ole) Karbo; sister-in-law, Helen Cox; and many, many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; sister... This week, I share more of my choices for the best garden plants and places to buy them throughout east-central and northeast Wisconsin.
On the road nearly every day, traveling between the different communities and exploring garden centers and public gardens, these decisions were often difficult to make, as we are so fortunate to have access to many high quality and creative gardening destinations.
The first part of this series appeared last week.
BEST PERENNIAL
The spring and early summer of 2015 was a spectacular bloom season for flamboyant and dramatic bearded iris. A long, warm spring resulted in outrageous, long-lasting blooms for these stunning and colorful plants. I also was highly impressed with the many varieties of baptisia this summer and grew even more attracted to their textured foliage, stunning shape and blooms, which attract hummingbirds and more.
