Jan 12, 2017ANNETTE CHENEVEY COLUMN: 6 or 9: A Christmas gift that wasn't mine
How many of us can go back to the first time we chose not be truthful?
For me, it was when I was 10 years old, sitting at my fourth-grade desk at Union Grove Elementary School, anxiously waiting to draw out a number that would indicate which Christmas gift would be mine. The girls’ and boys’ gifts were numbered and placed in two different piles.
Eagerly, I reached for a number. Depending on which way it was turned, it was either a 6 or a 9. I took my number to the teacher, Mrs. McGarr, and she handed me a gift that had either a 6 or a 9 on it. Upon opening, I found a small, white handkerchief with little embroidered flowers on one corner. I glanced across the aisle to the next row of desks where another little girl was opening her 6 or 9. Her gift was a shiny bracelet with a purple glass heart in the center. More quickly than I realized, I had taken my 6 or 9 back up to the teacher, and my gift was swapped for the bracelet. I had figured out how to claim the gift I wanted most.
I took my gift home and set it up on a cabinet. The beauty had diminished. I can’t remember ever putting the bracelet on my arm. I never told anyone abou... (Mooresville Tribune)
May 18, 2016Potatoes and flowers and pies, oh my! Farmers markets opening for 2016 season
Wednesdays, and farmers markets can be found throughout Racine County, as well, in Sturtevant, Caledonia, Raymond, Union Grove and Burlington — each offering different days and times of operation and its own selection of vendors (see accompanying list for details).
The Burlington Farmers Market, for example, opened Thursday in Wehmhoff Square, and will continue on Thursdays, from 3 to 7 p.m., through the last week of October. In its ninth year, the market features both seasonal produce vendors and artisans, with an average of about 20 vendors per week, according to Carol Reed, market manager.
Shoppers can find everything from early spring lettuces, spinach and rhubarb to hanging flower baskets and bedding plants, as well as locally produced cheeses, handcrafted soaps and jewelry, Reed said.
The market has a vibrant, community atmosphere and also offers entertainment, prepared foods and — new this year — craft activities for children, through a partnership with United Way.
“Our farmers are all very knowledgeable and good about sharing ideas, recipes and tips with shoppers,” Reed said.
In addition to cash, the Burlington market uses a token system that allows shoppers to use credit cards to buy tokens, good for purchases throughout the market. Vendors also accept Quest cards, from Wisconsin’s Quest food share program, Reed said. Quest cards can be used to purchase vegetable plants, as well as grown produce, at the market, she said.
