Judy Russell faith column: Thankful for snow, flowers, food and years of life

Buy PhotoFather Matt Simonar, who has been on a sabbatical in Rome for three months, recently sent greetings again to his flock at St. Jude Parish in Oshkosh."I want to thank those who have sent me letters and cards — your thoughts and prayers have been very appreciated. You've also made the other priests jealous of me for receiving so much mail from home."Also, I want to thank whoever sent us snow a few weeks ago; you're too kind. I believe we received 5 inches. The last time Rome received snow was in 2012, and the time before that 1986. The priests from Australia, who have never seen snow before, were like children on Christmas morning." Joseph Francis Cullinan, skilled private pilot, served on Coast Guard

Block Island for lunch with his wife, or longer trips with his son and fellow pilot, Nick. Of the many flying adventures to Tampa, FL and Oshkosh, WI, he proudly recalled his most challenging flying adventure was to the Bahamas. Together, their blended family shared many special holidays and events.Joseph loved good food, a cold beer or two, and long discussions. He was always proud of his children, step-children and grandchildren, and appreciated their unique gifts, often with unspoken admiration. He loved to be surrounded by them, and rarely missed an opportunity to be in the company of family. His good humor, and his quiet, powerful and loving presence will be greatly missed.Joseph is survived by his wife, Teresa, his sister, Mary Ball of Wilton, CT; five children; Michael Cullinan (Cathy) of Plainsboro, NJ, Joseph Cullinan of Vershire, VT, Margaret Cullinan-Hill of New Canaan, CT, Nicola Cullinan (Katie) of Bethel, CT and Maria Naughton (Bob) of New Canaan, CT; two step-children; Anne Tomaselli (Larry) of Norwalk, CT and Meg Doyle of Norwalk, CT; fourteen grandchildren; Austin, Micayla, Katie, Aidan, Elizabeth, Alexandra, Siobhan, Bobby, Kathleen, Susan, Laura, Michelle, Shane and Michael, and one great-grand daughter, Marlina. He was predeceased by a brother, Michael Cullinan. The family will received friends at the Edward Lawrence Funeral Home, 2119 Boston Post Road, Darien on Thursday, January 7, 2016 from 4:00 to 8:00 PM. Buy Photo 2nd Chance Goods is now open at 1605 S. Main St.(Photo: Nate Beck / Oshkosh Northwestern Media)Buy Photo A florist shop is now open under a new name, and other shops keep popping up along Main Street. The Garden Gate Floral has moved from its location at 909 Oregon St., and is now open on Jackson St. under a new name. The Flower Studio, 2200 Jackson St., will renew its focus on floral features for weddings. The word is that this new space features a cooler room to store bouquets. 2nd Chance Goods is now open along South Main Street, and a new Thai restaurant eyes its grand opening Wednesday. 2nd Chance Goods, which supplies discounted food, health, beauty and pet supplies, opened Tuesday at 1605 S. Main St. The shop fills the former site of Tews Two Sporting Goods, which closed in last October after more than 50 years in business. Ed “Jiffy” Lemke first opened there as a retail and repair shop in the 1960s. Best of luck to Tasty Thai, which will celebrate its grand opening at 1027 S. Main St. next to The Lucky Penny, on Wednesday. That storefront on... (The Oshkosh Northwestern)
