May Day gathering targets exploitation

I hope you'll all pray that somebody who knows something will say something," he said. Marcia Kitto, a sexual-assault advocate for the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, said one in every three Native American women is subject to a sexual assault during her lifetime. She also noted that indigenous women are twice as likely to die as a result of domestic violence than non-Native women. "Our men and women have carried this pain and silence too long. This walk is a time for healing, for the celebration of life, friends and family," she said. "Come walk with us to honor all survivors of sexual and domestic violence — the trafficked, the murdered and the missing. Walk with us to restore our traditional values of respect for men, women and children in our communities." Lyz Jaakola, a Fond du Lac band member, called for an end to violence against women and sex trafficking. "This is something that is happening in real time, and sometimes it's hard for us to speak about it, because we know that it is affecting everyone in our community, not just the indigenous people. It affects everyone," she said. "We're all witness to it, and it has to stop. I'm happy to see so many people here who can carry this message. Jaakola said she views the ongoing exploitation of Native Americans as a sad and painful reality. "It has to stop. It has been going on for centuries. This is our heritage. This is a legacy that must stop. I myself am a survivor of sexual assault, as are many women in this crowd, and as are many men in our community, as well. This is not a legacy we want to pass on to future generations," she said. (Duluth News Tribune)
