Rufous hummingbirds often occupy conifer forests, mountain meadows, broadleaf and riverside forests and residential areas, and can be found from coastal areas to above mountain timberlines.
A variety of trees and shrubs will attract these small beauties to a yard or garden:
Shrubs for hummingbirds
Azaleas are no stranger to most gardeners. The native shrub’s white-to-pink flowers emit a lovely fragrance. Plant azaleas in moist, acidic soil in sun or part shade, and use mulch to control weeds and conserve moisture.
Red-flowering currant, another popular Northwest native, is a reliable garden shrub grown for its brightly colored magenta flower clusters that appear in early spring. “They flower early, usually earlier than most shrubs, and are an important shrub for Rufous hummingbirds,” says Jennifer Weikel, a wildlife biologist with the Oregon Department of Forestry. “Rufous hummingbirds often arrive from their winter grounds to Western Oregon around the same time red-flowering currant begins to bloom,” she adds. Red-flowering currant can reach 8 to 10 inches in height, so give it plenty of room to grow. It prefers well-drained soil in a sunny location.
Manzanita is a versatile, attractive native shrub with evergreen foliage and clusters of dangly, urn-shaped pink or white flowers that bloom in late winter or early spring. It also features smooth, reddish-brown bark; soft, hairy leaves; and tiny berries that appear in late June. Highly drought-tolerant, manzanita prefers well-drained acidic soil and full sun.
Trees
Pacific madrone has glossy, dark-green, oval-shaped leaves and stunning orange-red bark. Hummingbirds, as well as other birds and mammals, rely on this native tree for berries and food.
