Flowers and Gifts News
Aug 15, 2016Fragrant flowers can evoke summer pleasures and stir memories
No summer garden can be described as scented without Oriental lilies. I asked Dianna Gibson, owner of B&D Lilies in Port Townsend, which she considers the most supremely fragrant. This discerning grower with fields and fields of lilies calls out ‘Musassi’ as the most pleasing scent of all. This new-for-2016 lily is an Oriental-trumpet hybrid, with upward-facing blossoms so purple, they’re nearly black.
You can make the most of fragrant flowers by layering a variety of scents. Think about how in a good conversation people’s thoughts play off each other and words overlap as voices rise and fall. Fragrance, too, is enriched by interaction. The lemon scent of a waxy magnolia blossom drifts down from a tree branch to soften the warm, resinous scent of lavender, which in turn takes the edge off the intoxicating sweetness of Oriental lilies. Just make sure at least one stand of those lilies is ‘Musassi’.

Feb 2, 2016Music, poetry and art continue to thrive at Morso
Northwest and beyond who come to read and share their work. Each reading ends with an open mic.
February's Muse at Morso will feature Port Townsend poet Michael Daley.
"We're also working on scheduling Bill Yake, Victory Lee Shouten, Kelly Russell Agadon, Washington State Poet Laureate Elizabeth Austin, James Berlontino, Anita Boyle, Jim Teeters, Dennis Caswell, David Horrowitz and Nancy Dahlberg for our upcoming months," Lynn said.
Art at Morso
Visual art also gets a nod. Every month a different artist's work is featured.
Carol Virak will open a one-woman show, "Mon Amour de Fleur," on Jan. 26.
On Feb. 23, local artist Tami Figliola curates an exhibit by Nikki Brook; and Sooz Mansueto, Karen Miner and Barb Bourscheidt will display their 3D creations starting March 22.
And of course, there's food and wine every night.
"Sometimes people think that we are just a wine bar, but we're a full service restaurant with a wine bar flair," Lynn said.
The restaurant hosts wine tasting events, winemaker dinners that pair unique culinary creations with appropriate wines, and special holiday events.
"We have a Fat Tuesday menu planned for Mardi Gras on Feb. 9 featuring things like shrimp and grits, oyster po'boy with apple slaw, gumbo and fried green tomatoes," he said.
During Valentine's weekend the menu will feature a selection of steak and seafood items and even a special champagne buffet.
"No one in our area is doing more different kinds of things than we are," Lynn said. "It's consistently interesting and it changes all the time."
