Letter: Bees cannot feed from some flowers

Ohio. I write this letter to further emphasize that not just any flower can feed a bee. I keep my bees in Grandview, a neighborhood full of flower gardens, but I was forced to feed them sugar-water throughout most of last summer due to a lack of flowers they could eat from. Humans have selectively bred flowers for our own benefit (to get showier blooms, drought resistance, etc.) and, in many cases, we have bred away the structures that bees seek for nutrition. As a general rule, hybrid flowers produce little to no pollen and nectar. Native bees cannot always feed from imported ornamental flowers, as they have evolved separately. Furthermore, it takes a tremendous number of flowers to feed a hive. Conventional estimates say bees visit 2 million flowers to make one pound of honey! And here in Ohio, it takes at least 40 pounds of honey to feed a hive throughout the winter. Readers should be aware of this when planting flowers this spring. Alaina Engdahl Columbus...
