Chelsea Flower Show 2020: Florence Nightingale's pressed flower collection to go on show - Countryliving (UK)

Margaret Stovin, a notable botanist of the day, who presented her with an album of the pressed flowers they had collected and assembled together in Derbyshire. The collection contains over 100 plant specimens, many of which are exotics that had established themselves in English gardens by the early 19th century. The RHS Chelsea Flower Show garden will also feature Florence Nightingale's favourite flower, the foxglove. The planting palette will include two varieties: digitalis purpurea 'dalmatian peach’ and digitalis lutea.Designed as a restorative space, The Florence Nightingale Garden – A Celebration of Modern Nursing will be enclosed on three sides by a sculptural timber pergola and surrounded by imagined perimeter rooms that evoke the 'pavilion' hospital layouts proposed by Florence Nightingale. traveler1116/Getty Vibrant planting will highlight the importance of green spaces for health and recovery and depict the 'nurture through nature' theme of the garden - inspired by the idea that the shortest road to recovery leads through a garden. More on Chelsea 2020:The garden has been designed for viewing from inside the building, as well as for sitting in and strolling through, with shaded places to rest sited among naturalistic planting including a stylised birch grove and a series of mounded ornamental beds.Subtle design detailing throughout the garden will evoke key elements of Florence Nightingale’s life. Echoes of her handwriting will appear to be inscribed onto the timber perimeter walls to embody her extensive writing in support of healthcare reform. Elsewhere, a collection of the recently redesigned Nightingale Nurse badges will be set into the garden path as small bronze roundels, denoting both her enduring legacy and her ability to inspire the next generation of leaders in the nursing profession.See a selection from Florence's pressed flower collection below: img alt="Florence Nightingale pressed flower collection RHS Chelsea Flower Show" title="Florence Nightingale pressed flower collection RHS Chelsea Flower Show" class="lazyimage lazy...

From flowers to festivals — Judges picked to evaluate 2019 Rose Parade floats have unique backgrounds

The trio that will decide which floats are best in this year’s Rose Parade consists of a celebrity wedding planner, the Kentucky Derby Festival CEO and a florist who used to design floats herself. The Tournament of Roses each year selects several people to judge the 45-or-so floats based on criteria including design, floral craftsmanship, animation, thematic interpretation and color presentation. This year’s theme is “The Melody of Life.” This year’s judges are wedding planner Preston Bailey, Kentucky Derby Festival CEO Michael E. Berry and floral designer Kimberly Oldis. Bailey’s lavish celebrations heavily feature floral design. His clients have included Oprah Winfrey, Ivanka Trump and Liza Minnelli. He says he tries to create drama with natural beauty in his wedding and event designs — seemingly a prime fit for the Rose Parade’s celebration of all things floral. “My favorite way to wow the guest is to create something they’ve never seen before,” he said in an interview with The Knot. “Any wedding or any event is about transporting the gues...
