JMU students pick their favorite Valentine's Day date

Valentine’s Day. She thoroughly enjoyed a play produced by the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, Virginia, because of its quality and distinctiveness from the average date.“I like the dinner and a movie idea but I feel like that’s a normal, typical date,” Erickson said. “Seeing a play is something special for a special holiday.”Though Erickson traveled to Staunton for her theater experience, JMU also offers performances on campus at the Forbes Center for the Performing Arts. The play “I and You” will be playing Feb. 13-17 at the Forbes Center. Tickets for JMU students are only $6, making this date original and affordable. Rebecca Harris, a junior WRTC major, shared an opinion similar to Erickson’s. Harris preferred an atypical Valentine’s Day date at an art gallery. While the art gallery option only received four votes out of 25, Harris made her choice while weighing the pros and cons of the other alternatives presented in the poll. “I like going to art galleries, and also, I thought it would be a nice place to potentially talk to the person you’re with,” Harris said. “Watching movies are nice, but I also want to be able to talk to the person the whole time and hear what they have to think.”There are several art galleries in Harrisonburg that showcase various pieces from a myriad of artists. Art shows are available on campus at Duke Hall and in downtown Harrisonburg. Going on a romantic hike was the most favored date choice among women and the second most favored option among men. This date idea is an accessible and often low-cost experience, especially in Harrisonburg and its surrounding areas. The Shenandoah Valley and the George Washington National Forest are full of hiking trails that range in difficulty and scenery, and while this date can be weather dependent and time-consuming, it’s an enjoyable option for couples who enjoy fitness and the outdoors.Vineyards and breweries can be pleasant places for a date, as they offer space for relaxed conversation and a... Paul McCartney: Flowers In The Dirt Reissue

Flowers In The Dirt, which hit #1 in the UK but just barely missed out on the top 20 on the Billboard 200 at #21. Upon its release, Terry Staunton of NME declared, “Flowers... is the sound of McCartney leaving the cosiness of his fame cocoon and actually competing again.”Now, Capitol Records is reissuing an expanded version of the album. As has been typical with other releases in the Paul McCartney Archive Collection, a two-CD set has been released alongside an even larger super deluxe three-CD + DVD set with books detailing artwork and a behind-the-scenes look upon the sessions. Additionally, you can grab two free downloads of demos not on any of these configurations so far through McCartney’s official website.Flowers In The Dirt often sounds of the ‘80s production era, from the go-go inspired “Rough Ride” to the drenched vocals on “Motor Of Love” to the avant-pop of “Ou Est Le Soleil.” Looking back upon his post-Beatles career, it falls in the upper middle tier of his work, behind such works as Band On The Run, Flaming Pie, Tug Of War, and Chaos And Creation In The Backyard. What was happening around him in the pop music realm of 1989 was a scene dominated by much younger competition with acts like Motley Crue, Bobby Brown, Prince, Madonna, Debbie Gibson, and Janet Jackson all notching multi-week runs atop the Billboard 200. Flowers didn’t even threaten the upper reaches of the charts in the US.Of the nine Costello-augme...

The final first day of school

Flint has taught at the school for the past 37 years. (Photo: Mike Tripp/The News Leader)Buy Photo STAUNTON — For the past 37 years Mary Flint has welcomed each first day of school at Beverley Manor Elementary School the same way, with a mix of nerves and excitement, but with an abundance of the latter. In a lot of ways Tuesday was no different. Flint greeted her first grade class of 13 students — one student was not in attendance — many of whom she had met at the school's open house the previous week, and settled into a schedule and routine. "It's been a dream," Flint said. "It's like Christmas. No one sleeps. It's just a special day." For all intents and purposes Flint has spent her entire career at Beverley Manor Elementary School. She was hired right out of college to work as a kindergarten teacher at Wilson Elementary School. After two weeks of class she was called into the principal's office and told that she was needed at Beverley Manor Elementary School. And she never left. "I was the young one right out of college," Flint recalled of the early years at Beverley Manor. "For 20 years the staff didn't change." In 2000 teachers began to retire and new faces joined the fray. But the school has a surprisingly low teacher turnover. In fact, there are no new grade level teachers this year, said Principal Miranda Ball. For that reason Beverley Manor Elementary School has always fe... (Staunton News Leader)
