Downey Rose Parade flowers lead to a trail of aloha - The Downey Patriot
Downey since forever. Little did I expect the flowers would become a trail of Aloha. As I drove past Exotic Hawaiian Apparel, their windows in Firestone Boulevard were empty and when I turned into the back lot, the door was locked. Peering inside I could see the store was completely empty. No ruffled Island floral frocks, no colorful outfits for little keikis, no authentic vintage outrigger canoe hanging for the ceiling. When I had talked with owner Martin Orloff for this paper (June, 2019), he and his wife had said there was a new owner for the building. Their lease was up for renewal and they anticipated a possible move, if prices were too high. The showrooms that day were filled – stuffed – with so many items that Martin’s parents, who founded the business in the 1960’s, had brought back from Hawaii. Where did all those good things go?I drove into the back parking lot of Art’s Camera, the western bookend of the same row of shops, which covers a half-block on the south side of Firestone, between Paramount and Myrtle. The door was open, customers were browsing, and as always owner Art Valencia was standing behind the counter. Art has been here since he opened in the 90’s, offering advice to gifted amateurs and helping seniors cope with new mechanisms. I gave him a spray of purple cymbidium. “Lovely,” said Art, “I’ll give them to my wife.” ... Sep 19, 2019
Reston Artist to Debut Floral Quilt Installation Next Week - Reston Now
A local artist will debut her floral quilts and fiber art at a new exhibit in Reston next week.
Anne Smyers is the creator of “Sat It With Flowers,” an art installation that embodies her “love of flowers and propensity to work with botanical images,” according to the Reston Community Center event page.
The installation opens Monday, Sept. 16, and runs until Oct. 31 at RCC Hunter Woods (2310 Colts Neck Road).
“Her work is informed by interests, including gardening; a lifelong practice of tai chi chuan, which is a Chinese meditative movement series; and her artistic eye that looks for the best arrangement of a given set of elements,” RCC said.
A free reception will be held from 2-4 p.m. next Sunday, Sept. 22, at RCC Hunter Woods. Smyers will speak at the event, where there will be refreshments for attendees.

Community Gardens Coming to Open Spaces and Rooftops Under New Zoning Rules - Fairfax County Government NewsCenter
Allowed on Ground and Rooftops
Previously, the county’s zoning rules limited community gardens to planned residential communities like Burke or Reston. These gardens now are allowed without restriction in open spaces as long as they are under two acres, and they aren’t the principal use on a property. However, community gardens aren’t allowed on single-family home sites.
With one in three U.S. households growing their own food at home or in a community garden according to the National Gardening Association, the county made its zoning changes to meet this demand. There’s also increasing interest in gardening among millennials — 18 to 34 year olds now make up 29% of gardeners according the association’s 2018 data.

County officials point to the long waitlists for the Park Authority’s nine community gardens as an example of how this national trend is playing out locally. Because of the previous zoning rules, there are only about six private community gardens in the county t... Jun 22, 2019
