Flowers for Dreams brings its burlap-wrapped bouquets to Milwaukee

Chicago, next-day delivery is free. Dyme said delivery will cost $10 in Milwaukee, as it does for orders to the Chicago suburbs, until volume in the new market grows. For the next few months, its hip, burlap-wrapped bouquets will continue to be assembled in its West Town studio and transported to a Milwaukee dispatch center, from which local couriers will deliver them. The company has hired an on-the-ground city manager to do local business development and marketing, Dyme said. That person will also work to identify local charities that will receive donations from Milwaukee sales. Dyme said he plans to follow the Uber model of placing a person or two to start drumming up business in a new market before investing further. Once business in Milwaukee picks up, Flowers for Dreams could add more operations and people there. "Slowly but surely we do want to make as cool of a presence — I guess in my opinion — in Milwaukee as we do here," Dyme said. Flowers for Dreams has nearly 25 full-time employees, plus a handful of part-time and independent contractor workers.  aelahi@chicagotribune.comTwitter @aminamania ... (Chicago Tribune)

It's not just a Christmas tree farm, but Lake Forest Gardens still bring joy to the world

Lake Forest’s reach even farther. He began to examine the rapid growth in the suburbs surrounding Pittsburgh and believed a new market was opening up. So Alan and Sharyn purchased additional land and established a re-wholesale outlet for area landscapers and homeowners. They would grow part of their inventory and buy the rest from other vendors. In 1979, Woodrow and Eleanor retired and moved to Florida. Lake Forest Gardens, now 600 acres strong, was ready for Alan to assume control. And soon after, he was joined by a third-generation Dambach. Though he was still a teenager fresh out of Riverside High School, Kevin began working side-by-side with his father in the late 1980s. Today, in his role as company president, he focuses on the growing and production ends. “My weak point is the office and the books and that’s my dad’s strength,” he said. “My strong point is the growing and the machinery. We stay with our roles and it works well.” +2  Alan Dambach, left, and his son Kevin Dambach run Lake Forest Gardens, the business that Alan's father started in 1939 in Marion Township. Sally Maxson/The Times Five other members of the Dambach family also pitch in at Lake Forest Gardens:  Sharyn continues to handle bookkeeping duties, primarily in the evenings. Kevin’s wife, Julie, is a pharmacy director by trade. She handles the craft store and refreshments for visitors. And Kevin’s three children: Jason, 19; Austin, 17; and Maddie, 14, help on the weekends. All three are standout athletes and have been excused from additional responsibilities because of it. “I always told my kids, ‘If you want to be good at sports, you need to practice year round,’” Kevin explained. “So I gave them the choice. If they were willing to put in the work on the field, they didn’t have to work here during the week. They’ve accomplished a lot and I’m very proud of them.” There are three distinct segments to the farm’s business model: Re-wholesale -- The Dambachs grow, buy and sell evergreens, shade trees and shrubs to landscapers. This accounts for about 60 percent of the annual revenue. Straight wholesale -- Pines, firs, arborvitae, oaks, maples and other shade trees grown on the farm account for 30 percent of sales. Christmas trees -- This aspect of the business brings in about 10 percent of the revenue. What? Only 10 percent from Christmas trees? Alan laughed. “I know people think of us as a Christmas tree farm, but it’s only a small part of what we do.” But at this time of year, they do it in a big, big way. 'Tis the season No doubt you’ve heard of the 12 days of Christmas. At Lake Forest Gardens, it’s more like 12 years. That’s how long it takes for a seed to grow into a flourishing tree for your home. As you might expect, patience is one of the Dambachs greatest virtues. They have no choice. “When we get the transplants from another location, they’re a little more than a foot high,” Kevin explained. “It takes four years just to grow that tall.” These tiny trees are frozen when they arrive at Lake Forest, and the Dambachs keep them that way until it’s time to plant. “Most trees begin to grow on May 1 whether they’re in the ground or not,” Kevin said. “We don’t want them to start growing until they’re planted. That’s why we keep them asleep.” Each season, the Dambachs harvest a new... (Timesonline.com)
