Flower shop hands out free bouquets for a purpose - WHSV

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) — Visitors at the Walmart on Burgess Road in Harrisonburg on Monday morning were in for a surprise. Harmony Harvest Farm handed out free bouquets of flowers to raise awareness of proposed federal legislation that would require federal agencies to only procure cut flowers and greens produced within the United States. "As a flower farm within the U.S., we are trying to spread a little awareness for niche agriculture enterprise and this bill that helps support American flower farms," said Jessica Hall, one of the owners. As of right now, the United States is the world's largest importer of cut flowers, accounting for about $1.73 billion worth of global imports in 2016. Domestically grown flowers make up a much smaller portion of the U.S. flower market. Hall added July is American-Grown F...

JMU students pick their favorite Valentine's Day date

Cupid’s arrows as people begin to express extra endearment toward loved ones or admirers this holiday. Luckily for JMU students, Harrisonburg and its surrounding areas offer several romantic options to satisfy all couples with eclectic interests.Every individual is different; some people appreciate simplicity or being outdoors, while others enjoy artsy locations and entertainment. After polling 25 male and 25 female JMU students, the results indicate how the “perfect date” differs among the sexes. The students had five choices to choose from regarding their ideal Valentine’s Day date: going on a romantic hike, getting dinner and a movie, visiting an art gallery, seeing a play or taking a trip to a vineyard or brewery.Lydia Erickson, a junior writing, rhetoric and technical communications and communication studies double major, was one of two women who opted to enjoy a play on Valentine’s Day. She thoroughly enjoyed a play produced by the American Shakespeare Center’s Blackfriars Playhouse in Staunton, Virginia, because of its quality and distinctiveness from the average date.“I like the dinner and a movie idea but I feel like that’s a normal, ty... Do April showers bring May Flowers?

HARRISONBURG, Va. (WHSV) -- With the first day of May, some of you may be asking, 'Do April showers actually bring May flowers?'The Valley's climate is very conducive to plant growing because the moisture we get during the April and May months help those plants to bloom, according to Chuck Rodamer, the owner of Rodamer's Landscaping.Rodamer said that the best time to plant is now or even earlier in the year in order to establish a good root system before the warmer months of June and July roll around."Typically April, everybody talks about April showers, well May, notoriously, we get a good bit of rain too," said Rodamer. "So if you can get your garden in before the temperatures really rise, you'll be a whole lot better off and so will your plants. Spring: it's just a real, real busy time for us and for the homeowners, too. You know, there's nothing better than a bunch of color from annuals and perennials. It makes you feel good and it's real rewarding."However, you might want to hold... (WHSV)

Flowers ends stellar career at Sam Houston

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Senior cornerback Darion Flowers stood on the sixth floor of Bridgeforth Stadium, wearing the white visiting uniform with orange trim of the Sam Houston State football team. The John Tyler High School graduate had just finished addressing the media late Friday night following a game against host James Madison University in the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs in the central Shenandoah Valley. It was a shocking weather environment for Sam Houston, which has a roster full of players from Texas. The temperature sank to 25 degrees by the end of the game, which was broadcast nationally by ESPN2. And the outcome on the field was less inviting, as the top-ranked team in the country fell behind 21-0 in the first quarter and trailed 42-0 at halftime en route to a 65-7 loss to JMU before a crowd of 15,646. “It was a great atmosphere, great facilities, which we knew coming in,” Flowers said. “It was a great feeling to play on Friday night again. It is like Texas high school... (ETFinalScore.com)
