F.C. Florist Sends Bouquets to Congresswomen Targeted by Trump - Falls Church News Press

Rabinovich sent flowers to four congresswomen whom President Donald Trump told to “go back” to the countries they came from. (Courtesy photo) A Falls Church florist delivered some botanical aid to the four Democratic congresswomen who were the subject of one of President Donald Trump’s Twitter tirades earlier this month. It didn’t take long for Alisa Rabinovich, owner of Galleria Florist in Falls Church, to take action after witnessing an all-too-common political altercation devolve into something nastier. In response to in-fighting between House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Ca.) and four freshmen Democratic congresswomen — Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) and Ayanna Pressley (D-Mass.) — Trump chose to chime in with a tweet, asking “Why don’t they go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came?” That line in particular struck a racial connotation with Americans who watched the verbal barbs being traded, especially ones who are a part of the country’s immigrant community. Advertisements Rabinovich decided to lend some scented support to the congresswomen after...

At the US Botanic Garden, a pungent corpse flower brings a touch of the Gothic

It’s wonderful that people still get excited about a flower blooming,” said Mausser, who lives in Falls Church.By late morning, the garden’s curator of plants, Bill McLaughlin, arrived to try to extract pollen from Vlad, in the hope of sending some to the Chicago Botanic Garden, which is on bloom watch for its latest corpse flower, Sunshine. “I also want to collect some pollen for the plants here that are about to bloom,” he said. The botanic garden plans to stay open until 10 p.m. Sunday and at least until 7 p.m. on Monday, later if Vlad is still presentable.Even its flaccid decline is part of this strange plant’s fascination, said McLaughlin. At its maximum height of 91.5 inches, Vlad was the biggest corpse flower to bloom at the botanic garden, though McLaughlin and his colleagues are quietly thrilled by the prospect of one of the other two exceeding that. “It has ascended seven inches in 24 hours,” he said. “It might be a monster.”@adrian_higgins on Twitter More from Lifestyle: We’re only beginning to understand soil’s hidden world Are our gardens the monarch butterfly sanctuaries we think they are?
