Bed-and-breakfast wins town approvalThe Warrenton Town Council this week granted a special use permit for a bed-and-breakfast inn on Culpeper Street.Barbara H. Wilson received approval to operate a small-scale inn at Mecca, her 19th-century Italianate home at 194 Culpeper St.As a condition of approval, Mrs. Wilson agreed to post no sign and do no advertising of the inn. She will open no more than three rooms to guests, because of insurance limitations, said Mrs. Wilson, who owns Loveladies Antiques on Main Street.Habitat for Humanity to dedicate first homeFauquier Habitat for Humanity will dedicate its first completed home for a local family at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 24, in Warrenton.The ceremony will take place at the new 91 Haiti St. home of Charles and Annabell Gibson. Autumn festivals celebrate apples, flowers, animals and agriculture

Festivals galore, most with free admission, are happening this Saturday and Sunday in the Culpeper area celebrating agriculture, apples, autumn, flowers and fall fiber on the first weekend of October. All of them will go on rain or shine even as a chance for wet weather lingers for Saturday. So dig out your boots and enjoy the great outdoors of the Virginia Piedmont. Here’s a look at what’s happening: SATURDAY ONLY GORDONSVILLE FALL FESTIVAL: Formerly a street festival, the Fall Festival in the town of Gordonsville in Orange County moved three years ago from Main Street (U.S. 15 south of Culpeper) to the nearby fairgrounds at 301 E. Baker Street and there it has stayed. It happens this year from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. next to the Gordonsville Volunteer Fire Dept. and is one of the company’s biggest fund-raisers. The fall festival will feature kettle corn, fried chicken, the art of Edwin Talley, free Gideon Bibles, Barbara’s Soul Food on Wheels and dozens of other vendors selling crafts, food and more. Belyea. The search for a wedding cake and a disc jockey brought Allan Matisans of Manassas and Marie Boltersdorf of Woodbridge to Culpeper on Sunday. “I think expos are fun and we thought it would be great to go to,” said Boltersdorf, whose wedding date is Oct. 15. Vendor Kristin Kirkpatrick, owner of Fat Girl Cakes in Fredericksburg, said Sunday’s event was her first time participating. “I didn’t even have to get on [Interstate] 95 so I figured I’d just give it a shot,” shared Kirkpatrick, who sells baked goods from her home. “I’ve been getting some interest and this will help expand my reach a little bit further beyond the Fredericksburg region.” Samples of wedding fare included crab dip, roasted red pepper and feta cheese dip, meatball, fresh fruit and miniature mousse cups and barbecue from local businesses such as Sean's Smokehouse, Clearwater Grill and Pepper's Grill. Joy Salyards, owner of Reflections Bridal in Harrisonburg, highlighted six wedding gowns complete with bridesmaids, flower girls and mother of the brides modeling the gowns in six separate scenes. Asked how the Bliss Bridal Show is a perfect match for her bridal business, Salyards said, “So people realize how different we are.” Rixey Manor owners Ben and Isadora Rindner said their exclusive-use venue is steeped in history dating back more than 200 years. “You get the entire property for three days,” explained Ben Rindner. “That’s four bedrooms, the event space, and us coordinating and helping throughout the entire process.” Dancers from Social Graces Ballroom Dance Studio kept the crowd entertained with demonstrations of various partner dances.
