In the 1970's, during Kent's stint at Everett-Waddy as a draftsman, one of his bigger...

Floral industry adapts to avoid withering

Newport News, while the other is planned for the Suffolk area. The branches on Baker Road in Virginia Beach and Battlefield Boulevard in Chesapeake will remain open.Lone Star Bloom owns 16 brick-and-mortar flower shops across several states – a business they promote with a “Sell Your Store” tab on their website.Brown said he sees his business role as stepping in and revitalizing local retailers. Most of the floral shops were financially struggling when the company bought them, he said, but that’s not the case with Norfolk Florist.“They have been growing every year since five years ago,” Brown said. “Most of the flower shops we look at have five years of declining revenue. It was definitely the strongest florist we had come across.”Companies like Teleflora and FTD have been strong players in the floral industry by creating a network of florists for online orders and deliveries.Shops can pay up to around 30 percent commission from the orders through these websites, Brown said. All three floral shops work with one or both of these companies.“Everybody’s taking a little piece of the pie out...” Parker said. “The rate of the orders coming in doesn’t amount to what you’re paying out to them.”In the end, Munford said keeping customers coming back means providing quality and expertise.“For these life changing moments, you want the best,” she said.
