Hundreds participate in John Flowers Easter Egg Hunt
Easter egg hunt. This year, the event was held in memory of John Flowers, Poughkeepsie High School student Caval Haylett — who died of a gunshot wound earlier this month — and city Councilman Tracy Hermann — who passed away suddenly of an apparent heart attack earlier this month as well.
The free event has been going on for 20 years, and was first sparked by John Flowers' experience as a child growing up in Alabama.
“When he was a kid they used to have big Easter egg hunts in Alabama,” Flowers' son Frankie Flowers said. “He wanted to make sure to give something to the kids to enjoy.”

The free event draws nearly 3,000 kids annually, and attendees say it gives the children something to do, as well as bring the community together. They also had a pie-eating contest, musical chairs and face painting.

“I used to do Easter egg hunts down here when I was younger,” La’Tia Strothers said, adding that her family volunteers for the event regularly.
Beyond bringing back fond memories, those at the event said it also brings the community together.
"It's one of the things the community can come together for the children for," city resident Sara Ricci said, adding that with many people living in poverty, the fact that the event is free helps spread the ... (Poughkeepsie Journal)Feb 3, 2016
