Hundreds participate in John Flowers Easter Egg Hunt

Easter egg hunt. This year, the event was held in memory of John Flowers, Poughkeepsie High School student Caval Haylett — who died of a gunshot wound earlier this month — and city Councilman Tracy Hermann — who passed away suddenly of an apparent heart attack earlier this month as well. The free event has been going on for 20 years, and was first sparked by John Flowers' experience as a child growing up in Alabama. “When he was a kid they used to have big Easter egg hunts in Alabama,” Flowers' son Frankie Flowers said. “He wanted to make sure to give something to the kids to enjoy.” Each year, volunteers arm themselves with thousands of eggs stuffed with candy, hiding them under hay in carved out sections of the city park along the Hudson River. The free event draws nearly 3,000 kids annually, and attendees say it gives the children something to do, as well as bring the community together. They also had a pie-eating contest, musical chairs and face painting. The egg hunts are broken up by age groups, and even allow adults to get involved. "We try to keep it the same" each year, Frankie Flowers said. "All the kids know what to expect." Some of those who brought their children to the event were reminded of their own childhood experiences. It was city resident La’Tia Strothers’ 3-year-old daughter A’niya Strothers' first time participating. “I used to do Easter egg hunts down here when I was younger,” La’Tia Strothers said, adding that her family volunteers for the event regularly. Beyond bringing back fond memories, those at the event said it also brings the community together. "It's one of the things the community can come together for the children for," city resident Sara Ricci said, adding that with many people living in poverty, the fact that the event is free helps spread the ... Frank Phelan, 61 of Trumbull

He is survived by his wife Virginia of 25 years and his two sons, John and Samuel all of Trumbull, his brothers and sisters, Judith Berak (Aylett, VA), Nancy Manning (Wilmington, NC), John Phelan Jr. (Edmunton, Alberta, Canada) Robert Phelan (Manassas, VA) and Janice Phelan (Cleveland, OH). Relatives and friends may greet the family at the Abriola Parkview Funeral Home, 419 White Plains Road, Trumbull, CT on Monday, February 1, 2016 from 4-8 pm. A memorial service celebrating Frank’s life will take place on Tuesday at 11:00 am in the funeral home. Interment will be held privately at the convenience of the family.
