Barbara White Lord, 86, lent her flower-arranging skills to make worship centers a place of beauty

As her children reached maturity, she found a place to take her talents to a new level as administrative assistant at the Annandale United Methodist Church, where she directed a staff of this large and growing congregation. When she moved to Williamsburg, she joined Chapter BA of the PEO Sisterhood and enjoyed the many activities with these wonderful friends. Her final years were spent in the Williamsburg Landing, a retirement community where she made many more acquaintances and enriched the lives of those she met with her joyful spirit and friendly greetings. The family is most appreciative of the loving care provided to her by the staff of the Woodhaven nursing facility.A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 8, at Williamsburg United Methodist Church, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, gifts may be made to the Williamsburg United Methodist Church or to a charity of your choice.Share online condolences with the family at (Williamsburg Yorktown Daily)

Buckingham Florist Closed on N. Glebe Road

Updated at 4 p.m.) The Buckingham Florist, a long-time local business on N. Glebe Road, closed last week and appears to have relocated to Annandale.Open since the 1940s, the florist delivered to Arlington County, Arlington National Cemetery and other parts of Northern Virginia.Jean Tucker Bassin founded Buckingham Florist with her late husband Myer. Their son Neil Bassin is listed on various websites as having also owned it. In 2013, another website said Buckingham Florist was owned by Kim Park, who also owns Annandale Florist and Tysons Flower Affair. As of last week, the flower shop’s location at 301 N. Glebe Road in the Buckingham Shopping Center was shuttered, an empty shell with no fixtures or fittings and some of its tiled floor ripped up. A retail leasing brochure lists the 1,460 square foot space as “coming available.”An employee at the next-door Ravi Chatkhara takeout restaurant said he heard rumors the florist would be relocating elsewhere and would be replaced by a coffee shop. The phone number listed for the florist is still active. A person at that number answered Tuesday and told the store is now l...

Art from poet Robyn Marie Butt's third in a series of four books relating to flowers, with audio of her poetry, is ...

Butt’s third installment in what will become a series of four books of poetry about flowers, is currently on display at Annandale House in Tillsonburg.Butt, an award winning writer and dramatist, describes her epic project as “frequently making her wonder, but never making her regret.”Art lovers can listen to Butt’s poems through an MP3 player, while admiring the art works.“Poetry is an art form that is meant to be performed,” Butt said. “We have forgotten that when poems get stuck between the covers.”Featuring the art of Robin Tatham and John Ens, the show opened last week and runs until April 2.All of Butt’s books four books have been or will be dedicated to “to the human experience of flowers.”The first book of poetry dealt more with garden flowers, while the second focused on wildflowers. The third book is dedicated to lives and works of artist Mary Delany, with poems illustrated by Tatham, and early 20th century English physician, homeopath and mystic Edward Bach.Delany, whose subject was frequently flowers, was an English gentlewoman in the 18th century, well known for detailed embroidery that she designed herself, and took up collage as a widow at the age of 72.“No one knows this but she invented the art of collage,” Butt said. “I love that she invented a whole new art form and mastered it. She kept up with it until, at age 88, her eyesight was gone.”The second part of the books is focused on Bach, well known in Europe as the inventor of the Bach Flower Remedies, or tinctures made from flowers.Ba... Freeze Warning Overnight: How to Protect Your Plants

Silver Spring, Columbia, Ellicott City, and Aberdeen. In Virginia, communities in the warning area include: Prince Frederick, Reston, Herndon, Annandale, Centreville, Chantilly, Mclean, Franconia, Arlington and Alexandria. The Weather Service warns: “A freeze watch means sub-freezing temperatures are imminent or highly likely. These conditions will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation.” If you're a gardener, then you've harvested most of your bounty by now, but there are several frost hardy plants that can survive even if the overnight temperatures drop to 28 degrees. So, leeks, scallions, chives, brussels sprouts, broccoli, kale, parsley, beets, carrots, winter squash, pumpkins and sage should be OK, according to the Vegetable Gardener website. Here are some steps you can take when a frost or freeze threatens, according to Bring Indoors: Frost-tender plants in containers should be brought inside during cold weather. Dig up tender bulbs and store them in a cool dry place.Water Plants: Water plants thoroughly before a freeze to prevent desiccation and to add insulating water to the soil and plant cells.Protect Tender Sprouts: Cover tender plants overnight with an inverted bucket or flower pot, or with a layer of mulch. Be sure to uncover them in the morning when the temperature rises above freezing.Cover Shrubs and Trees: Larger plants can be covered with fabric, old bed sheets, burlap, or commercial frost cloths (avoid using plastic). For best results, drape the cover over a frame to keep it from touching the foliage. Fabric covers help to trap heat from the soil, so make sure your cover drapes to the ground. Uncover them in the morning when the temperature rises above freezing. Here's a look at the coming week's weather forecast, from the National Weather Service: Saturday night: Mostly clear. Lows in the mid 30s. West winds around 5 mph.Sunday: Sunny. Highs in the upper 50s. West winds around 5 mph.Sunday night: Mostly clear. Lows around 40.Monday: A slight chance of showers after 8am. Mostly sunny, with a high near 60. Chance of precipitation is 20%.Monday night: A chance... (
