Moon flowers, a romantic Ocean Beach garden, the Monterey cypress - San Diego Reader

The nasturtiums I planted last spring have matured in their flower bed and annexed every available inch of arable dirt. Photo by Sandy Huffaker, Jr. Debris of an Early Spring Garden When did you become such an avid gardener?” Anthony asks “Oh, I don’t know,” I say, my mouth dry. “It was last April. A week or so after my father died. One day I came home and just started weeding. This place was a mess. I came home and started weeding, and the next day I started planting all the seeds I could buy. It sort of became an obsession, but, I guess, a harmless one.” By Abe Opincar, May 9, 1996 Read full article The late Henry Huntington once bought a whole garden simply to preserve a superb specimen of wisteria, a vine believed to be the oldest Wisteria floribunda in America. The Moment Leaves Started to Turn The late Henry Huntington once bought a whole garden simply to preserve a superb specimen of wisteria, a vine believed to be the oldest Wisteria floribunda in America. Perhaps he saw it in winter, when wisteria is bare like a man's arms. That's when its true capacity is revealed to you, its power to entwine, suffocate, merge, and topple. Wisteria can break concrete or strangle a tree. By Laura McNeal, Jan. 30, 1997 Read full article Adblock test a href="https://blockads.fivefilters...

Spring Festival of Flowers to include flowers, edible plants, trees and activities - Pensacola News Journal

This ties in perfectly with the region’s cash crops like peanuts and cotton while trying to meet the recurring challenge of farming in the state’s sandy clay soil. Currently, the West Florida outpost is researching the potential of a new yield. “When Florida introduces a new crop to our state, we have a responsibility to ensure we protect our natural resources for today and generations down the road,” said Mark Long, the admissions officer for WFREC. “This means we need to ensure the new (emerging) crop doesn’t threaten our waters, soils, wildlife, forests and it doesn’t bring in insects or kill off insects we need. As an example, we are growing carinata (an oilseed crop that can contribute to biofuel) at our research facility and all 10 of them get involved for a variety of reasons.”As the center and the IFAS as a whole is a state and county effort, the Spring Festival of Flowers is a direct result of this cross pollination as it curates its participant...

History flowers in tiny heritage petunia - Warwick Beacon

Brown family roots. Brown and his wife Ann live in a house overlooking Occupasstuxet Cove, the southern end of Gaspee Point and the sandy spit that once was Greene Island. From his porch, it’s easy to imagine not much has changed with the exception of the disappearance of the island after decades of battering storms and a few severe hurricanes. The cove is still. In the distance is the distinguishable outline of Conimicut Light. But it’s something much closer that holds Henry’s attention and is one of those bits of history that give community character. It’s a tiny blue bloom, an anemic petunia given today’s demand for bold and bashing floral displays. For what it lacks in size the flower makes up with brilliance and fragrance. Further along its reaching tendrils are larger blossoms. Henry calls them “heritage petunias.” He knows their history – maybe stretching back 100 years, who can say – because he played in role in identifying and preserving them. It goes back to the days he collected garbage on Gaspee Point. He can’t forget Mrs. Reed. The Reed family leased a plot of land where they first erected a tent. Later they built a platform for the tent and eventually a house. Always interested in stories and history, Henry was fascinated to learn Mrs. Reed’s mother immigrated from Northern Ireland and her mother and father, who worked in the mills along the Blackstone River, lived in the Providence area. What started out as a Gaspee tent became a summer home and eventually Mrs. Reed’s home. Mrs. Reed – Henr...
