Margaret Anne Combs, adoption counselor for Catholic Charities, dies at 94

After graduating from the Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield and the University of Minnesota, she worked for a time as an art teacher and then a clerk at a jewelry store, said her niece, Joan Petersen of Minnetonka. Catholic Charities of St. Paul and Minneapolis hired Combs in April 1968. She was so excited about the prospect of being a social worker that she fibbed during the job interview and told them she could drive, Petersen said. Upon being hired, she rushed to obtain her driver's license, but driving was never her strong suit, Petersen said. "She just really enjoyed helping create families," Petersen said. But Combs took confidentiality seriously and rarely spoke about the specifics of her work, Petersen said. "She was very supportive whether clients decided to make an adoption plan for a child or decided to keep the child," said Graham, who worked with Combs at Catholic Charities for several years. "She had a lot of insight and could see how this work affected everyone's life in the adoption triad - the adoptee, the adoptive parents and the birth mother." In her free time, Combs volunteered at a crisis pregnancy center, which Graham said helped her to better understand the difficult decisions involved.

Stanley Bachman grew the family's floral business

University of Minnesota."They just fell for each other," said Paul Bachman. The couple married in 1948 and raised two sons in Richfield.Upon returning from his tour of duty, Stanley had planned to pursue a different career, "but Stan realized the value and beauty of plants, flowers and trees," said Dale Bachman, the current CEO. "He said it was the best choice he ever made by re-entering the family business."Stanley Bachman served as a mentor to ambitious employees. He hired Dick Herberg, then a teenager, to work at the Lyndale store. He eventually became the COO, remaining with the company for 47 years."Stan taught me ethics and to always supply the best products for customers," Herberg said.He also was a stickler for details."Dad would walk into a store and find the one plant that hadn't been watered," said Paul Bachman.Active in many retail florist organizations, he was elected to the Society of American Florists Hall of Fame in 1989 for his many contributions."Stan was always available to give other florists advice to help them succeed," said Peter Moran, CEO of the society. After retirement, he served as chairman of the board of directors and continued to plant and maintain his vast vegetable and flower gardens in his Richfield yard.In their 60s, Stanley and Georgia started golfing and took frequent golfing trips until Georgia's death in 2014.Even at age 90, Bachman was tending the gardens on the grounds of Friendship Village senior housing."Stan was more than just a smart businessman," said Herberg. "He was one of the nicest people you'd ever meet on this Earth."Bachman is survived by his two sons, Paul and Peter, four grandchildren, a sister, Betty, and sister-in-law, Margaret. Services have been held. (Minneapolis Star Tribune)

A warm goodbye for Berghaus Flowers after 126 years (photos)

Fawcett said. So he and his Fawcett Foundation bought a 17-acre farm in Richfield.  It was going to be bulldozed to make way for residential properties, but instead will have fruit trees, bees for honey, berries and produce maple syrup. Fawcett loves history and restoring old buildings, and has already stabilized the original barn in Richfield. A bundle of surprises and energy, he sounds like he is just out of college on the phone, but is actually 55. His day job, the one that fuels the foundation, is as president and co-founder of North Ridgeville-based Kellex Seating, which provides furniture for resorts, hotels and managed-care facilities worldwide. It has manufacturing facilities in North Carolina and Mississippi, employing hundreds. What makes Fawcett think he can grow food the way he has grown a significant business? "When I was 10, we moved out onto a non-productive farm," he said. "My dad was banker by day and gardener by night. All my life, I've just loved getting my hands in the dirt." His new property also has him digging deeply into Cleveland history. The Berghaus story here began with five family members -– three brothers, a sister and their mother -- who left Friedrichstadt in the German state of Schleswig-Holstein in the early 1880s. By 1889, the brothers were florists on Cleveland's West Side. They moved to the current site at 3257 West 41st St. in 1902, and built a small store and greenhouses. All of that was razed around 1915, except for one soaring chimney that remains, and five new greenhouses and a brick storefront became the core of the business. Today, two of glass houses remain, with the other three re-purposed for storage and work space. The elegant house is unoccupied, and the only residents are cats in the greenhouses –- Oscar, a gray and white male, and Midnight, a jet black female and several of her offspring. Fawcett says that the cats will remain long after the last Berghaus has gone. Kim Berghaus described the final Saturday afternoon as both festive and wistful. "There was a constant in and out, with family, friends, neighbors and people who used to work here coming and going," he said. One neighbor, a woman who lives across the street, had threatened to come over and picket, "because you can't leave,'' Norm Berghaus quoted her as saying. Plain Dealer photographer Lisa DeJong contributed to this story. (cleveland.com)
