Park City Gift and Gourmet is a sweet endeavor for three local businesses - The Park Record

Some of the local artists that sell their work at the store include KMK Design from Silver Creek, Frost Apparel from Kamas and Cottle Farms in Payson.“I do have some providers who don’t live in Park City, but have local connections,” she said. “We have a candle maker who lives in L.A., but her mother-in-law lives here.”Blanken, in turn, also taps into the local community for her flowers and plants.“Most of my plants come from a vendor in Salt Lake City, and during the spring and summer I work mainly with local growers,” she said. “They don’t use pesticides and are fully organic. But since they are seasonal, they aren’t available during the winter. So I do import some of the plants from out of the county.”In addition to selling the plants, Blanken also hosts an array of workshops the include terrariums, wreaths and flower arranging. On March 25 at 6 p.m., she will host a free feng shui workshop. Information and registration is available at https://www.eventbrite.com/e/harmonize-your-home-with-feng-shui-tickets-96344331489“This has been great for Kathryn, because we keep this place open,” Woolstenhulme said. “We can just drop in a line of tables to help her grow that component.”Woolstenhulme knows there is room for growth with Park City Gift and Gourmet, so she’s keeping her options open as to what the three will decide to stock next.“We just want anything fabulous,” she said with a smile. “Who knows what else we will decide to offer?”...

Hearts And Flowers Close On Heels Of Christmas Decorations

On Jan. 10, local Tonto Village resident Steve Kamp added another candle to his birthday cake. The next day, Laura Bierwirth of Colcord Estates and Payson celebrated her big day. Laura is a Domino Diva so she celebrated with the Divas on Wednesday, Jan. 11. Laura was treated to her favorite dessert (razzleberry pie), a round of singing the birthday song and other surprises. Thursday, Jan. 12, another Domino Diva had a special event. Dara and Phon Sutton of Bear Flat celebrated their 37th wedding anniversary. Happy anniversary. May you know many more years of joy and love. On Jan. 16, (Martin Luther King Day, by the way and a federal holiday), Garah Monich of Star Valley will be celebrating her birthday. Garah is the clerk of the Hellsgate Fire Board, and she also can be seen working hard at Walmart. A very happy birthday to you and to Laura and Steve. I hope your birthdays are wrapped in smiles. Recipe of the week Since this week is the Suttons’ anniversary, the recipe will be her cornbread recipe that is in the “Fireflies Can Cook” cookbook. My hubby swears that this is the best cornbread he has ever had, and I heartily agree. Dara has brought the cornbread to the Divas’ gathering on Wednesdays and the Divas also agree. Cornbread 1 cup butter 1 cup sugar 4 eggs 2 cups creamed corn 1/2 cup Monterey jack cheese, grated 1/2 cup medium cheddar cheese, grated 1 cup all-purpose white flour 1 cup yellow corn meal 4 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Using an electric mixer, cream butter and sugar, then add eggs one at a time. Gradually, mix in corn and cheeses. Stir in remaining ingredients. Spread evenly in a greased 9-inch-by-13-inch cake pan. Place in oven, close door, and IMMEDIATELY reduce oven temperature to 300 degrees. Bake one hour. Top will still seem moist-looking, not dry as in a cake. Center should be set, not gooey. Serve warm. In these times when everything and everyone is in a rush to get where they are going, a saying by Jim Rohn seems very appropriate — “Either you run the day, or the day runs you.” ... 86-year-old Utahn sings Christmas song on The Killers' album

Ned Humphrey Hansen, who lives in Salem, taught Flowers in fourth grade at Taylor Elementary School in Payson. “I was so surprised when I found out that he was with a group called The Killers, because as a student he was very mild and timid and … he wouldn’t even kill a fly I don’t think,” Hansen said. “He’s a very good student and he listened and apparently things stuck in his mind things that we did and so he was a very good student.” Something that stuck in Flowers’ mind was when Hansen sang “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” to his class in 1990 and taught them what the song meant, according to Hansen. Hansen sang “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” for his class around Dec. 7 or 8 that year, he said. “I told them about all of the men who were called into the service after Pearl Harbor and they thought that the war they were going to would be a very short one,” Hansen said. “And they thought in early 1942 that they would be home by Christmas and that kind of became their theme in the army. I think that each year as the war didn’t end, they kept saying 'Well, this year we’ll be home by Christmas.' But every year ... for several years until the war was over, they talked about being home for Christmas and that they would be home. But they would just... (KSL.com)

The Killers come home for Christmas with their annual holiday song

Ned Humphrey Hansen. Flowers introduces the song with a spoken word story of his family moving from Henderson, Nevada to Payson, Utahn where he first met Hansen. Hansen sang “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” a capella to Flowers’ fourth grade class and it struck such a chord with the singer that he brought him along for this year’s holiday release. “I’ll Be Home For Christmas” is available for download now, with all proceeds benefiting Bono’s (RED) charity. Also available for download is Don’t Waste Your Wishes, an 11-song collection of The Killers’ holiday output featuring Elton John, Richard Dreyfuss, and Mariachi El Bronx that will be released as a limited edition CD on December 9, available exclusively through the band’s website. Rim Holidays

There was no clinic or hospital to accommodate a birth even as late as the 1950s. Rose Burdette was living in the Apache community just south of Payson when her time came to deliver. The family called on local Constable Howard Childers to take her to the nearest hospital in Cottonwood. With her in the back seat he started over the unimproved Fossil Creek Road. On the way Howard became aware of a new voice in the back seat. A boy had been born and Howard stopped the car long enough to cut the cord. They continued to the hospital where Rose named her new son Howard in honor of the constable. During Childers’ 30-year tenure he made many of those trips to Cottonwood. Mother’s Day was not formally introduced in America until after the turn of the 20th century. Anna Jarvis of West Virginia began a campaign in 1905 for an annual religious celebration honoring mothers. Jarvis’ efforts resulted in Congress making the second Sunday in May a nationwide observance beginning in 1914. When she died in 1948 she had become dismayed at how the celebration had turned into a commercial jubilee, missing her original point of encouraging young mothers and honoring aging mothers who had suffered so many losses. Perhaps the pioneers’ more somber acknowledgment of Mother’s Day was more to the point.  Next: Flag Day. (Mother's Day - Payson Roundup)
