Gardening: Four winning flowers from All-America Selections - Saskatoon StarPhoenix
My mother-in-law grew ‘Straight-8’ cucumbers, a winner from 1935, and always shared her delicious and bountiful yield from her backyard. In my garden, two past winners have been outstanding: ‘Foxy’ foxglove (1967 winner, dwarf annual, a mixture of creamy white, mauve and pink flowers) and ‘Tropical Rose’ canna (1992 winner, dwarf tender perennial, flowers from seed in the first year). This year’s floral AAS winners are:— Coleus ‘Main Street Beale Street’— Coneflower (Echinacea) Sombrero® Baja Burgundy— Nasturtium ‘Tip Top Rose’— Black-eyed Susan (Rudbeckia) ‘American Gold Rush’
Clockwise from top left: ‘Main Street Beale Street’ Coleus, Sombrero (r) Baja Burgundy coneflower, ‘Tip Top Rose’ nasturtium and ‘American Gold Rush’ black-eyed Susan. (Photo courtesy All-America Selections)
There are hundreds, if not thousands, of coleus varieties, but ‘Main Street Beale Street’ is AAS’s first winning coleus (Solenostemon scutellarioides). Upright and bushy (24-36 inches), this coleus has stunning deep red leaves that retain their colour even in full sun. It flowers late in the season with short spikes of small purple flowers – but since the leaves are the main attraction, simply pinch them out as they appear. It grows well in both sun and shade, sturdy enough to withstand rain and wind and tolerates heat. Ideal as a container plant, cuttings also make an excellent addition to fresh floral bouquets from your garden.Sombrero® Baja Burgundy coneflower (Echinacea hybrida) sports long-lasting 3-inch burgundy-red flowers atop medium height, sturdy stems (18-20 inches). It is rated as hardy to zone 4, which in Saskatchewan means plant it in a sheltered location and cover the soil with mulch. Plant it in full sun in well-drained soil; otherwise it tolerates a wide ran... Jul 5, 2019

Spring gardening provides inspiration - Renton Reporter
Garden to visit near Paris: Monet’s garden in Giverny
Steal from the Italians: Formal Forms
Mama Mia! You won’t see bountiful blooms in a traditional Italian garden as lack of water has taught Mediterranean gardeners to use form and symmetry to create the living masterpieces of classic garden design. In your own garden use balance and symmetry to add a more formal look to the front of a house with matching urns or container gardens. Do not try to grow the tall and narrow Italian cypress in our wet winter climate. Instead substitute the tall and skinny Ilex ‘Sky Pencil’ to create exclamation points in the landscape or to fill a classic terra cotta container with evergreen form.

Six gardens that green Southwest Florida year-round
Fall Garden Festival to Edison & Ford Winter Estates on Nov. 17 and 18 - proof positive that we need not wait until spring to revel in bountiful gardens throughout the area.
Here are ways to celebrate Southwest Florida's greenery and blossoms with visits to these six showy public gardens.
Peace River Botanical & Sculpture Gardens, 5827 Riverside Drive, Punta Gorda - which just celebrated its oneyear anniversary last month - is a 27-acre waterfront oasis abutting the Peace River. It encompasses the diversity of five ecosystems, including marshlands, wetlands, mangroves, uplands, a tidal basin and an island amphitheater. Flowering trees and plants bloom throughout the year. More than 15,000 square feet of boardwalks and docks are projected to provide optimum viewing of the park's massive sculptures. Future expansion will see the addition of art galleries, multiuse facilities, an amphitheater, conservatory, welcome center, gift shop, cafe and more. Hours are 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Tuesday-Sunday (closed Monday). Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors and $8 for students (through high school), with children 5 and under free.
