Gardens, friendships are growing in Meadow Lake and El Cerro Mission

Teresa Smith de Cherif. The heart of the district is Valencia County, but also takes in portions of Bernalillo, Cibola, Sandoval, Socorro and Torrance counties. +5  Mary Mraz watches as the water harvesting barrel is installed at the Meadow Lake Community Center. The water caught in the a barrel will be used to water the urban garden at the center. It is part of the Valencia Soil and Water Conservation District’s East Valencia Urban Garden Program.“We have the pueblos, the east and west mesas, where there are a lot of unmet needs,” said Smith de Cherif. “We are so grateful for the community and its support of our quarter mill levy a few years ago, which gives us the opportunity to fill some of those voids.”Voters in the district approved a 10-year, quarter mill levy on property taxes in 2013.Now with the mill levy providing steady revenue and thanks to a grant, the board has started a long-awaited program urban garden program.Starting in February, East Valencia Urban Gardens Program coordinator Lindsey Hamilton and volunteers in El Cerro Mission and Meadow Lake began the work of establishing garden plots at the county community centers in those communities. The board wanted to create a program that would help the community become more climate resilient and increase food security, Hamilton said.“There was also a concern among community members that there was a lack of opportunities in those areas,” Hamilton said. “An urban garden helps the district achieve it’s conservation goals, such as reducing weeds and erosion, and this meets those goals in a very holistic way.” +5  Y... Richmond nurseries Enchanted Gardens and Enchanted Forest

Employee Socorro Rodriquez has been working at Enchanted Gardens for 12 years. kelly schafler Enchanted Gardens and Enchanted Forest in Richmond grew courtesy of the green thumbs of co-founders Betty and Gary Lenderman. Betty, a biologist, had a love for gardening, and Gary, a chemist, “got pulled into it,” he said. In the 1970s, the couple started their first business, Country Gardens. From there, Gary and Betty’s passion for gardening led to additional locations. Three of their five children now manage the family businesses.    “It’s a lot of work, but people like to see all aspects of [gardening],” daughter Judy Ulke said. “I think with advancements in technology, people are craving something that’s more tactile.” Best things to plant this fall Flowers: violas, alyssums, poppies, pansies, petunias and snapdragons Vegetables: cauliflower, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, lettuce, spinach and bok choy Fruit Trees:  orange, apple, lemon, lime Enchanted Gardens 6420 FM 359281-341-1206 10611 FM 2759...
