Thompson & Morgan hydrangea first in RHS Chelsea Flower Show plant of the year

Bridie'. Paul Hansord, Masters' predecessor at T&M, said the way to get new plants into the show was to go to Peter Seabrook, who has 38 new plants on The Sun's exhibit at Chelsea and 14 entered into the new plant of the year, with nine on the shortlist. Seabrook spends all year seeking and trialling new plants but added that at 82 and as a veteran of 60 years at the show: "I'm unlikely to do this again, though if I don't who it, who does it?" Seabrook added that he gets "enormous support from the trade" including a lorry from WD Smith picking him and his plants up to come to the show at 5am. He said: "The pavilion has always worked as a family if you have a bit of a problem." For instance, Capel Manor's robinia was not yellow enough, so Seabrook brought one from home to the show this week for the college's stand. "Working together is what's made this show but its going, because the family businesses are going." Long-standing exhibitors Harvey's and Southfield's say this could be their last year, while Fibrex and Avon Bulbs did not exhibit at Chelsea this time after decades of showing.

Kathryn Crouch – Haskins Garden Centre, West End, Southampton said: "I’m growing an Apple Chutney Pot. This is a planting display to show why companion planting is important. Message with flowers

Photo: CHRIS SEABROOK 082916cturf90 Bathurst Regional Council will host a memorial service for Peter Brock on Thursday at 10am to mark 10 years since the racing driver’s death and to commemorate his life. Brock, as readers are no doubt aware, racked up a record nine wins in the Bathurst 1000. The service will be held at the Brock statue outside the National Motor Racing Museum. So where do the native flowers come in?  Bathurst motorsport fan Matt Irvine says fans attending the service should bring native flowers because the famous driver was a big fan of them. Matt, Parade is told, has been attending the Brock memorials over the past 10 years, including in 2007, when hundreds of people turned up at the top of Mount Panorama for the first Brock memorial.  The MC at the Brock service up at the Mount will be Supercars commentator Greg Rust. Celebration for Bette’s birthday WHAT’S better than celebrating your 90th birthday at the races? Celebrating your 90th birthday at a race meeting where one of the races is named in your honour. That was Bette Holland’s experience at Tyers Park last week, when the first race o... (Western Advocate)
