UIL puts Lufkin in district with Conroe schools, Beaumont West Brook

With Montgomery, we’re not surprised at all, but I was a little surprised about Beaumont West Brook,” Quick said. “But with Port Arthur Memorial going down, West Brook was the only 6A school around there, and they had to go somewhere. We are in the same boat. We are stuck with nobody our size around us, but we have to go somewhere. Somebody said this weekend that West Brook might be in there, but that was the first time anybody had said that. But it makes sense.” With it being a seven-team district, Lufkin also has to find another non-district game. The Panthers are slated to face Longview and Nacogdoches to open the season before going to the Battle on the Border in Shreveport, Louisiana, where they should face Parkway (Louisiana). That leaves Quick searching for a Week 4 game. “Our approach is to start close and then expand,” Quick said. “It’s starting to expand wider and wider. We are trying to find the closest thing we can and get a game that benefits the kids. We have some calls out there to see who still has an opening.” For Diboll and Huntington, the hope of staying in a football district similar to what it had been the past few years and going to Region III didn’t happen. Diboll and Huntington will remain in District 8-4A, Division II, where they will be joined by Jasper, Rusk and Tatum. “It’s not even close to what we thought,” Diboll athletic director and head football coach Blake Morrison said. “We will make do and get after it.” “It was good,” Huntington head football coach Brian Gandy said. “I was surprised. I figured we would stay south.” With it being a five-team district, Diboll and Huntington both had to pick up a sixth non-district game. Both teams picked up a game against a team they had thought they would join in district play. Diboll picked up Tarkington, and Huntington added a game with Shepherd. Diboll’s non-district schedule will consist of Madisonville, Crockett, Newton, Center, T... (Lufkin Daily News)

Florist delivers 'smiles' to PA nursing home

Williams Florist partnered with Teleflora on Wednesday to bring Make Someone Smile Day to the Port Arthur area. Teleflora, a flower networking company that delivers flowers to various areas, has sponsored Make Someone Smile Day for the past few years.  During the event, the company helps deliver smiley face mugs filled with different flower arrangements to people who could use a smile. Last year, Teleflora brought smiles and flowers to a local facility in Houston.  This year, they delivered 120 flower arrangements to Cypress Glenn Nursing Home in Port Arthur.  It was the first time Make Someone Smile Day had been celebrated in the area. “The purpose of the program is to brighten people’s day and give them something to smile about,” said Alli Meaux, a member of the Teleflora Board and Williams Florist.  Teleflora plans to continue Make Someone Smile Day and hopefully expand to new areas so that they can continue spreading smiles and giving flowers to everyone.
