Howard Dungan - Obituary - Legacy.com

Marine Corps, he instead joined the Army Air Forces. Training locations included, Santa Ana, California; Glendale, Arizona; Pecos, Texas; Douglas, Arizona; and Greenville, South Carolina as First Station. In the South andTexas he became more aware of deeper issues of racial inequality than he'd seen in Nebraska, where his family sometimes hosted a visiting African Methodist Episcopal (AME) minister for lunch, and he strove to treat everyone fairly throughout his life. In the chapel on base in Pecos, Texas he married Anita Alene Sibbitt, an accomplished violinist who had graduated from what is now the University of Nebraska at Kearney and taught high school for a year in Yutan,Nebraska. She followed Howard around the country for much of his pilot training, working variously as a butcher's helper, nurse's aid, and store clerk.Howard was later stationed in Hawaii, flying North American B-25 Mitchells. While he was flying missions in B-25s as a First Lieutenant in the 7th Air Force, 41st Bombardment Group, 820th Bomb Squadron out of Okinawa over Japan and Japanese-occupied China, Anita had become a "Rosie the Riveter" and learned gas welding at Ryan Aeronautical in San Diego. After the war she resumed teaching and then guidance counseling, and completed her master's degree at what is now San Diego State University. Howard also completed his bachelor's degree there on the G.I. Bill, and later his master's degree. Both did post-graduate work at the University of Southern California. From 1948 to 1984 Howard was a teacher and guidance counselor in the San Diego Unified School District, with most of that time at Theodore Roosevelt Junior High School (now Roosevelt International Middle School) where he primarily taught geography, social studies, and history, sometimes with what was referred to as a "Mr. Dungan story." Years into retirement, he would still run into former students greeting him and saying, "Mr. Dungan, you told the dumbestjokes and stories!" Howard would ask which one; the former student would repeat it and the context, and then he would reply, "Ah, but you remembered!"Howard and Anita loved to play golf at the Tijuana Country Club and Balboa Park Golf Course, were once active in the Methodist Church in La Mesa, and had a custom home built in Spring Valley where they resided until they passed. They vacationed in Mexico City, and traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and Canada with a succession of travel trailers. These trips were later accompanied by their only child, Michelle Dungan, now a retired California Department of Transportation Associate Environmental Planner. After Anita passed in 2006,Howard eventually...

In the Wild

In the wild, it is found in well-drained limestone bluffs of the Edwards Plateau and Trans-Pecos, most common in West Texas. It is a hardy perennial sub-shrub, densely branched and becoming woody at its base. It may be erect or somewhat sprawling, and grows one to two feet tall in sun or part shade.Rock penstemon is also known as Cut-leaf penstemon, Baccharis-leaf penstemon, and Baccharis-leaf beardtongue.Showy red trumpets, with a partial ring of white at their throats, bloom and rebloom all summer long. The dark-green leaves are thick and toothed and sometimes quite hairy. When in bloom, the clustered spikes of cherry-red, tubular flowers line the stalks of this plant, attracting large numbers of hummingbirds. This semi-evergreen beauty makes a very desirable rock garden plant if given excellent drainage, especially if its roots are shaded from late afternoon sun with mulch or rocks. In winter it may die to the ground, and should be strongly cut back, to promote a bushy habit when it wakes up in the spring. It is browsed by deer, so should be planted in a protected spot. It is an excellent alternative to annual water hogs like snapdragons ? a Penstemon relative. Also expect this one to reseed itself if it is happy. You?ll always be glad to have more of them!As with almost all Penstemons, the Rock penstemon is low-water and carefree ? though a little extra water will increase the number of blooms. This marvelous rock garden plant is good-looking in or out of flower. It can be purchased this spring from the following nurseries:? Natives of Texas, 4256 Medina Highway, 830-896-2169? Plant Haus 2, 528 Jefferson Street, 830-792-4444? The Gardens at The Ridge, 13439 S. Ranch Road 783, 830-896-0430Remember to look for the NICE Plant of the Season sign stake at nurseries and professional growers in the Kerrville area. The Native Plant Society of Texas-Kerrville Chapter hosts monthly programs at the Riverside Nature Center, 150 Francisco Lemos, September through May. Ruben Navarrette: Clinton panders for Latino votes

My father’s mom, Esperanza, was born in Pecos but spent most of her life in New Mexico and California. My mother’s mom, Aurora, lived for most of her life in the Rio Grande Valley before settling in central California. These women sacrificed throughout their entire lives so they could care for their husbands and give something to their children. Whether they had to live in migrant camps, or cook by the side of the road, or sew torn shirts into the wee hours, they never complained, took a handout, envied what others had, or saw themselves as victims – even though most doors weren’t just closed to them but bolted shut. Clinton’s generation of women complained about the glass ceiling. That’s a luxury when you grow up with dirt floors and your idea of a good job is one where you get to work indoors. Most of all, my grandmothers had ironclad values and deeply cemented views of right and wrong, and they didn’t barter them away for the sake of ambition or political expediency. Anyone who believes the silly stereotype that Latin women are weak, passive and submissive has never actually met one. And they don’t know the first thing about abuelas. Neither, it seems, do Hillary Clinton and her campaign. (Sacramento Bee)
