Oct 21, 2016Rail volunteers praised for use of flower power
Green-fingered volunteers have been praised for using flower power to brighten up stations on the new Borders Railway.
Midlothian South, Tweeddale and Lauderdale MSP Christine Grahame invited volunteers to the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh to thank them for taking charge of floral displays along the 31-mile route linking Tweedbank with the capital since it opened just over a year ago.
Among those invited along were guests representing Make Stow Beautiful, Melrose Rotary Club, Galashiels Community Council, Gala in Bloom and Scotrail.
Ms Grahame said: “I was delighted, along with my colleague Colin Beattie, MSP for Midlothian North and Musselburgh, to welcome representatives from the adopt-a-station scheme to Parliament.
“It was a real pleasure to meet the individuals behind the hard work we often take for granted as we travel up and down the Borders Railway.
“The newly-constructed railway stations along the line looked bare right after construction.
“These volunteers quickly set to work and have transformed the appearance of the stations with colourful flowers and vegetation, enhancing the entire ... (The Southern Reporter)
Jul 5, 2016The Sun Shone Bright on Deb's Daylilies Fourth Annual Wine & Flowers Festival
Jason and Robert from Extra Billy’s BBQ (Midlothian, Va.) kept pleasant aromas aloft of shrimp kabobs, hot dogs and barbeque. Many partook of the incredible eats they made available. Each customer’s money appeared well spent as there was enough meat on one bun to easily make two filling sandwiches. Although both food and beverages were offered at Deb’s Daylilies Wine & Flowers Event, patrons had the option of bringing their own. Some individuals thoroughly enjoyed parking themselves on a comfortable blanket in the shade and drinking or snacking from items they brought from home. While some were buying flowers, eating, drinking, listening to music or socializing with new found friends, others played a game of corn hole or admired the race car that is sponsored in part by Deb’s Daylilies. It should also not go without saying several guests brought along their pets to partake in the fresh air and festivities. The Parsons welcomed everyone – those with fur and, those without.
During the Wine & Flowers Event, a guest of Deb’s Daylilies could look in any direction and see that fun was being had by all. This was the fourth year for the event and, while it is still a fairly new annual affair, one can see that it will become more popular and anticipated every year.

Jul 5, 2016Flower baskets to brighten up Penicuik
Penicuik First.
The news was warmly welcomed by Penicuik Community Council at their latest meeting last week, when Midlothian councillor Derek Rosie (SNP) told them all about it, and other planned improvements in the town centre by the Business Improvement District scheme Penicuik First.
He said: “The hanging baskets should be going up in the next week or so. There will be around 40 in the town centre.
“Ten or 11 businesses are going to get brackets to put them up.
“We have identified where they will be going.
“Penicuik First are paying for it all, from the levy that the businesses are paying.
“We are trying to improve the look of the town centre.
“Once they are up that should be a decent display of flowers around the centre of town, just making it more welcoming.”
Councillor Rosie was also happy to reveal some more exciting work by Penicuik First. He said: “The other thing we are looking to do is get anchors built into the ?precinct to hold down the stalls for the market.
“This will mean the market can go ahead in any weather. So we won’t have to have it in the town hall when it’s windy. It will always be outside. This way it retains the footfall for the town centre businesses.
