Local resident helps to create Rose Parade float

Ginnie Bull of Kerrville and her daughter spent three days of Christmas vacation in Pasadena, Calif., volunteering for a project most people have only read about or seen on television – decorating a float for the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day.Bull said the adventure to Pasadena began with an email from the UPS corporate headquarters to all UPS store owners, asking for volunteers to help decorate the company’s float entry in the parade on Jan. 1.Ginnie and Bill Bull are the owners of the Kerrville UPS Store on Sidney Baker South.The 2018 parade was only the second time that UPS has had a float entry accepted for this famous annual parade.“I’ve never done anything like that, and it sounded interesting and fun. My daughter Angela Brinkley was home for a visit at Christmas with her family; and she said she’d go with me,” Bull said. “So I replied and told them we would come.”Brinkley teaches school in Louisiana and had a Christmas break, so they were visiting in Kerrville.The two of them packed suitcases... Plant Haus 2 expands, opens at new location

Weston Pacharzina of New Braunfels literally “grew into” the nursery and landscaping business that Kerrville residents know as Plant Haus 2, in the footsteps of his father Bob; and now the Kerrville location has a new and larger site on Jefferson Street.It’s been open for business since Feb. 13, while Pacharzina oversees the finishing touches on the new buildings and outside nursery, climbing a ladder and swinging a hammer himself for some of it.He said the staff moved the inventory and operation to the northeast corner of the Clay and Jefferson Street intersection, just across Clay Street from the older store.He said it’s been surprising to see how many customers have parked in the old parking spaces on the northwest corner and walked through the nearly vacant site, out the back gate and across Clay Street to get to the new store.“We have a new larger parking lot now, east toward Walgreen’s, and Trina (Cullins, manager) finally had a banner made to hang at the Jefferson Street entrance to get customers to pull in there and use it,” Pacharzina said.“We needed more room and more park... Funeral services announced for Tivy teen killed in accident

The Kerrville community is rallying around a Kerrville family who lost a second child in a motor vehicle accident over the weekend. Laura Burton, 17, who was affectionately known as “Peanut” by her family, died as a result of injuries from a two-vehicle crash that occurred outside of Fredericksburg at 8:50 p.m. Saturday, June 25. Laura was a Tivy High School student and was traveling with a classmate. Department of Public Safety Trooper Frank Zamora said the accident was still under investigation. According to Zamora, Laura was a passenger in a Hyundai Elantra, driven by a 17-year-old Kerrville male. “They were coming home to Kerrville from Marble Falls,” Zamora said. Initial reports, Zamora said, are that the teens were traveling south on Highway 16 from Fredericksburg to Kerrville and lost control in the area of the highway “known as dead man’s curve” on the southern outskirts of Fredericksburg. “According to witnesses, the driver of the Elantra lost control of the vehicle and began to ... Rock penstemon blooms and reblooms all summer long.By Cindy AndersonNative Plant Society of TexasThe Kerrville Chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas is featuring Rock penstemon ? aka Penstemon baccharifolius ? at local nurseries this spring as part of Operation NICE.NICE is an acronym for ?Natives Instead of Common Exotics,? a program designed to introduce people to great native plants that are currently available locally to use instead of non-native or exotic species.?By putting the spotlight on one native plant each season, we hope to increase the public?s appreciation and demand for these great Texas natives,? said Gwynn Groggel, also a member of the NICE team from Kerrville?s Native Plant Society. ?This will encourage the nurseries and wholesalers to offer more native plants.?As its name implies, Rock penstemon is a rock-loving plant adaptive to dry, rocky environments and xeric landscapes. In the wild, it is found in well-drained limestone bluffs of the Edwards Plateau and Trans-Pecos, most common in West Texas.It is a hardy perennial sub-shrub, densely branched and becoming woody at its base. Darryl “Bill” Earwood

Darryl “Bill” Earwood, 74, of Kerrville died on April 7, 2016, at his residence. He was born on Dec. 1, 1941, in Houston to Louna (Ivy) and Darryl R. Earwood. The family says he was a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, cousin, and uncle to his immediate family. He was also a brother in arms, having served in the 82nd Airborne Division of the U.S. Army. During his six-year enlistment the family says he met his match; a medic named Joyce Frakey. His grandparents, Eliza Jane (Beard) and Henry Jefferson Ivy of Utopia, lit the oil lamp in their one room cabin for his studies when he was only 6 years old. The family says he was known for masterful one-liners, and as a fair golfer, and he was a gentle man of great selfexpectations. His greatest pride came not from his vocations but his role as father, grandfather, and loving husband. The Ultimate Hill Country Wildflower Getaway

Because of its location at the crossroads of several wildflower routes, Kerrville is the ideal spot to serve as home base for this adventure. Day 1 Check in at the Carlton Club Inn (126 Plaza Drive, 830-353-2799) in Kerrville. Formerly a small apartment complex, the Carlton Club Inn has accommodations ranging from one-bedroom rooms to two-bedroom townhomes with full kitchens. If you need to stretch your legs after the drive from Austin, the hotel is walking distance from the Guadalupe River.
