Students lay flowers at Santa Fe memorial as witnesses recall massacre

Twitter accounts, Jaylen Thomas (North Shore High School), Tyon Merchant (A&M Consolidated) and twins Zyon and Tristin McCollum from Galveston Ball. Defensive linemen Osi Odume (Alief Taylor) and Azuka Mgbemena (Westfield) have verbally committed to Sam Houston, as have linebackers Desmond Robinson (Atlanta High School) and Huntsville’s Drew Mahlen. The Bearkats will need to replace three offensive linemen next year — center Bridge Blount, guard Sam Hardy and tackle Curtis Riser. Keeler wanted to add some depth to the receiver and running back positions as well, with star slot receiver Yedidiah Louis and running back Corey Avery having just one more year of eligibility. “We need to figure out who the center is going to be,” Keeler said. “We want to add some dynamic receivers and we graduate four running backs next year, so it was really important that we got a good freshman this year.” At the skill positions, the Bearkats have gotten verbal commitments from running back Kyran Jackson (South Hills) and receivers Quan Ardoin (Baytown Sterling) and Lutavious Boone (Huntsville). Though the Bearkats seem to be set at the quarterback position with Briscoe for the upcoming season and the near future with promising sophomore quarterbacks Caleb Griffin and Cody Brewer, Keeler and his staff have gotten a commitment from College Station quarterback Ty Brock, who suffered a broken leg in the second game of the 2016 season. “All the great teams I’ve had have had great quarterback play and we feel really good about who we brought in at that position, too,” Keeler said. With kicker Luc Swimberghe and punter Joseph Figenshaw having used up their eligibility, Keeler searched for a player that could kick field goals and punt and was able to find one in the high-school ranks. In his last two recruiting classes, Keeler has done a good job of bringing in transfers who have become major contributors, including Briscoe, Riser and linebacker Justin Johnson, who led the team in tackles this past season with 97. This year, Keeler said he and his staff didn’t have to go after as many transfers because of the caliber of the high school athletes that have committed. “We actually signed a very high number of freshmen, percentage-wise,” Keeler said. “There is going to be a very low number of transfers this year because we feel so good about the high school players we recruited. A lot of these guys can play early for us.
