Nov 9, 2019Brazos County flower farm hit hard due to freeze - KBTX
We normally sell wholesale to florists. We sell to many of the florists in Bryan / College Station. We also have flash sales and you pick here at our farm so obviously we're done right now. But in the spring of 2020 we'll be back," said Monroe.
She and her husband Jordan are only in their second season growing flowers.
"And I feel like we've experienced it all now so we had extremely wet winter last year. Last winter was really wet before that we had 16 weeks of drought during our first summer," said Monroe.
"We're hoping to triple our production this next year so those are all big lessons for us," she said.
Despite the loss, they remain hopeful.
"Farming is very optimistic so we're ready to pull ourselves up and get ready for 2020 so that's just part of the risk that we take," said Monroe.
The farm will getting some new flowers in the ground in the coming weeks. Monroe believes some selections in town may now be limited due to the freeze.

Mar 8, 2018Celebrating National Floral Design Day with local students
COLLEGE STATION, Tex. (KBTX) - When you receive a vase of your favorite flowers, you may not think about what went in to creating the arrangement, but since it's National Floral Design Day, we spent some time with local students who are learning the art.Throughout the three year program, A&M Consolidated High School floral design students get hours of hands on experience and even the opportunity to get a job in the industry. "It's a great part time to job to have just to get you through it and I might end up doing it as a career, I don't really know yet, but it's a really good opportunity," explained junior floral design student, Haily Brown. After taking an introduction to agriculture class, students can take introduction to floral design, then advanced floral design, and then during their senior year, they can choose to take a practicum class. The practicum class allows them to have an internship with a local florist and potentially get a job through that opportunity. Jan 12, 2018Pursuit of these 'pass-along' plants likely will encourage friendships to bloom, too
Italian jasmine (Jasminum humile) grew in front of our house when I was a kid in College Station. I’ve grown it in North Texas for the past 40 years. From all that experience I can tell you that I’ve never seen any insect or disease bother this plant, nor have I ever seen it hurt by winter cold. A little supplemental irrigation has brought all of mine through the worst of summers. In short, it’s just about indestructible. It’s a great little arching shrub that grows to 4 or 5 feet tall and 5 or 6 feet wide. It has extremely dark, glossy green evergreen leaves and small yellow trumpet-shaped flowers each spring. It does well in sun or part shade. It’s a shame that you so rarely see it.Dazzler holly was introduced back in the ’60s or ’70s and was reasonably common for about 20 years. Unfortunately, I suppose because its leaves have conspicuous spines, people shied away from it. However, consider what they’ve missed. It grows to 4 to 5 feet tall and wide. That’s a really useful size for landscaping shrubs. Its leaves are large and boldly dark green, the perfect backdrop to its very large and bright red berries that it displays all winter. It really earned its name “Dazzler.” It grows fabulously in sun or shade. I have 20 or 30 of them in my landscape, yet there’s little reason for me to recommend it because no nursery sells it.Glendora White crape myrtle is still my favorite white. It was introduced more than 50 years ago. It’s a selection of Lagerstroemia indica, which means it’s going to have slick gray trunks. Natchez and other hybrids of L. fauriei, by comparison, grow much more rapidly (which means the growers prefer it), and they have cinnamon-colored trunks that people like. But Glendora White has, in my opinion, better growth habits and tidier flower heads. It’s also more winter-hardy. But you’ll almost never see it in nurseries. Oh, and just to have mentioned it, if you see Sarah’s Favorite White offered for sale, that’s a sister seedling of Natchez, and many of us who work with crape myrtles on a regular basis feel that it’s a superior selection.Neil Sperry hosts“Texas Gardening” from 8 to 10 a.m. Sundays on WBAP/820 AM. Feb 9, 2017What does the future hold for Kats as national signing day approaches?
Caleb Griffin and Cody Brewer, Keeler and his staff have gotten a commitment from College Station quarterback Ty Brock, who suffered a broken leg in the second game of the 2016 season.
“All the great teams I’ve had have had great quarterback play and we feel really good about who we brought in at that position, too,” Keeler said.
With kicker Luc Swimberghe and punter Joseph Figenshaw having used up their eligibility, Keeler searched for a player that could kick field goals and punt and was able to find one in the high-school ranks.
In his last two recruiting classes, Keeler has done a good job of bringing in transfers who have become major contributors, including Briscoe, Riser and linebacker Justin Johnson, who led the team in tackles this past season with 97.
This year, Keeler said he and his staff didn’t have to go after as many transfers because of the caliber of the high school athletes that have committed.
“We actually signed a very high number of freshmen, percentage-wise,” Keeler said. “There is going to be a very low number of transfers this year because we feel so good about the high school players we recruited. A lot of these guys can play early for us. This will probably be the lowest number of transfers we’ve taken because of that.”
Highlights for the high school players mentioned can found at www.hudl.com.

Oct 5, 2016Wilting US cut flower industry could perk up with more university research
COLLEGE STATION — The U.S. cut flower industry all but wilted over the past 20 years, but much of the loss stems from lack of progress, which could blossom under more university research, according to Jim Daly, keynoter at the Ellison Chair in International Floriculture lecture at Texas A&M University.
“Floriculture in the last 20 years changed more than it changed over the previous several hundred years,” said Daly, vice president of Smith-Oasis-Floralife grower global operations and corporate research in Walterboro, South Carolina.
The Ellison lecture series is an annual event to explore current trends and issues in the floriculture industry worldwide, according to Dr. Charlie Hall, professor of horticulture and Ellison chairholder.
“Huge market changes affected how research innovation is done in floriculture today,” Daly told the audience of horticulture students and faculty. “I want to talk about how we can innovate better for the future.”
Until the early 1980s, he said, cut f... (AgriLife Today)
