Charlotte's Florals trucks in 'happiness' bouquets - Herald & Tribune

Charlotte’s Florals, the mobile flower shop that’s likely to be seen at farmers markets or downtown events anywhere between Johnson City, Bristol and Kingsport, has been rolling up to customers since 2015. But for owner and operator Charlotte Julian, the flower truck business was a way to fulfill a childhood vision — and offer a little happiness to roadside flower lovers. “I think from an early age I sort of had this entrepreneurial spirit,” Julian said. “I knew I wanted to have my own business of some sort. I knew I had a creative side. I just didn’t really know what that looked like. So when this opportunity came available, I kind of just hit the ground running.” One of the first steps in creating Charlotte’s Florals was finding the perfect truck for the task; once Julian found her iconic, white, Ford van from the ‘60s to tote the array of flowers from town to town, she knew she was ready to catch the attention of bystanders. “We really wanted to find a truck that would really catch the eye and I think we succeed in that,” she said. “We found a truck on Craigslist and went and got it in Ohio. We got it up and running and went from there.” When Julian parks her white flower truck at an event, customers get the chance to create their own bouquets or simply choose a couple of flowers from the selection. Tri-Cities business mixing chocolate and charity for Valentine's Day

KINGSPORT, Tenn. - A Tri-Cities business is mixing chocolate with charity to make Valentine's Day sweeter this year.Bellafina Chocolates in Kingsport is partnering with Kuda Vana, a home for abandoned and orphaned children in Africa. Bellafina Chocolates Founder and President Brenda Barnicki said profits from chocolate sales this Valentine's Day will be donated to the Christian children's home in Zimbabwe."They really try to support the children kind of holistically. They live in family groups and show them a lot of love. They also give them a great education and teach them about their nutrition," Barnicki said.The chocolate boxes will also feature the children's artwork. Master Gardeners help Tennessee grow better communities

Tennessee with a dedicated volunteer base of over 2,350 active Master Gardeners.Focusing a little closer to home, what do Master Gardeners do in Kingsport?“We have projects in seven counties here in Northeast Tennessee, and in those seven counties, we have 16 smaller projects,” Ramey explained. “People who live in Kingsport may be familiar with Darrell Rice’s Boundless Playground and Garden at Warriors’ Path State Park. There are several community gardens in Kingsport - one behind First Presbyterian Church on Church Circle, one near V.O. Dobbins, and one near Holly Hills. The Crumley House in Limestone has one, as do Healing Hands Health Clinic in Bristol and Carver Center in Johnson City. Probably the most well-known is the Hope Community Garden in Kingsport. Doug Hilton, one of our long-time Master Gardeners, has taken a special interest in that particular garden. It’s the largest garden in Kingsport, with 84 raised beds tended/owned by two churches, the Social Security Office, Habitat, Lowe’s, and other groups and individuals.”But planting and nurturing gardens are not the only things Master Gardeners do. Master Gardeners also design demonstration gardens to educate citizens on sustainable lawn, garden and landscape practices; they answer gardening and pest management questions at the county extension office; plan and host home and garden shows, garden festivals, county fair booths and diagnostic clinics to reach out to residents; write articles or give presentations to educate the community; work with youth and horticulture through 4H and Junior Master Gardeners; support the community through Plant-A-Row-For-the-Hungry, Habitat for Humanity, community gardens, beautification projects and much, much more.If becoming a Master Gardener sounds like something you might like, then you might consider becoming a Tennessee Extension Master Gardener. First Broad Street UMC to host Festival of Flowers

This year’s theme, “Faith of Our Founders,” will honor the history of the church and the city of Kingsport in addition to women of the Bible.The festival will kick off on May 18 at 9 a.m. and continue until 6 p.m. In the sanctuary, scriptures and floral arrangements will be set up to honor women of the Bible, and old photos of the church will be on display. Live music will also be performed throughout the day.As guests make their way in and out of the sanctuary, they will see a variety of paintings which were done by artists from the Kingsport Art Guild.In the chapel, early leaders of the city and the church will be honored. A replica of Church Circle, in addition to several historical photos, will be on display.To close the first day of the festival, a special Evensong service will be held at 7 p.m., and the community is invited to attend.For those who cannot attend the festival on the 18th, the arrangements will be on display again on May 20 from 9 a.m. to noon in the same locations.May 19 will be dedicated to floral workshops led by Charles Phillips, retired owner of a local flower shop and longtime member of the church.The first workshop, “Creative Magical Tablescapes,” will be held from 9:30-11:30 a.m. for $25. The afternoon workshop, “Let’s Make an Arrangement,” will cover basic flower arranging techniques and will allow participants to take home the arrangements they design. Bristol's Pippin Florist works hard to guarantee 'every petal is perfect'

Gibson said. “This is meant to be a loving time.”The Gibsons also own the Holston Florist Shop in Kingsport.Miller, the floral designer, has been arranging flowers for 50 years. She and Marsha Woolley, another designer at the shop, have been arranging simple orders of six roses to complex arrangements and requests for up to 36 roses for one order.Miller said orders such as a dozen roses don’t take much time because it’s all the same type of flower. The more varieties of flower involved and the more of them there are, the longer it takes. Some arrangements take up to half an hour.“You have to make sure every petal is perfect,” Miller said.The color red reigns supreme on Valentine’s Day, and roses are the shop’s most popular order, of course.“Roses are the Cadillac of flowers,” Miller joked. “The Rolls Royce, how about that.”She got out of church Sunday morning and headed straight to her work station at Pippin. She uses a curved knife, garden pruners and a spray bottle to clean up and set each arrangement.Gibson said the shop has received truckloads of deliveries every day for the past week or so. He ordered another 400 roses on Monday.Miller suggests not being a late bloomer when it comes to ordering flowers.
