Jun 19, 2020Flowers back in bloom on Detroit Avenue in Lakewood - cleveland.com
LakewoodAlive’s Flower Blossoms Program finds volunteers and business owners responsible for watering petunias and impatiens from Lincoln to Cordova avenues.“The Flower Blossoms Program is a great merging of our work with small businesses and coordinating volunteers enhancing our community’s quality of life,” LakewoodAlive Executive Director Ian Andrews said.“We’re a proud small-business community, so it enhances storefronts to have beautiful flowers, making window shopping that much more pleasant.”Led by Flower Blossoms Program Chair Kathy Haber, the initiative involves 17 volunteers who water and maintain flower boxes on their designated blocks.“The business people really like it, and the community loves it,” Haber said. “Detroit Avenue is a very stark street. We’re an inner-ring city, so anything we can do to make it prettier and brighten it up to make it cheery is well appreciated.”Haber said the program began with hanging baskets in the Marc’s plaza; however, it wasn’t until volunteers used Earth Box planters, which help maintain water and keep the flowers alive, that the effort expanded along Detroit Avenue.“Initially, there was a fear that if we put them on the street, kids would knock them over and people would fall over them,” Haber said. “It turned out th...

May 31, 2019'They did what they had to do': Relatives honor veterans at re-opened Galilee Memorial Gardens - The Commercial Appeal
Galilee Memorial Gardens in Bartlett as he began to reflect on the dedication his relatives made.
Jones, 54, of Cordova, said his brother Darryl Jones died at age 20 while serving in the Army. His uncle, Willie Jones, passed in 1990 after serving in World War II.
Morris Jones said his uncle faced issues of segregation during the war but thinks his uncle was just glad it was over.
"They had to go through things that I'm sure they were not proud of, but to serve their country, they did what they had to do. And that is what makes it so special," Jones said.
Darryl Jones enlisted in the Army in 1979 and was killed 12 days before his 21st birthday during a fight.
Morris Jones has younger relatives in the Navy, some of which have retired.
For the Jones' family, the observance of Memorial Day is a priority for them.
"It means a lot. They care enough for their country to serve their country. So we just want to honor them, not just this day, but all days because they gave so much," Jones said.
