Rare plants float on Chamberlain Lake

I am hiking with two ecologists to Chamberlain Lake, just west of South Bend, that an authoritative book on Chicago-area plants in 1994 had called “unique to the planet.”More than 120 plant species grow in this Crumstown wetland. By August each year, they form a thick, tangled carpet over the top of the water. Several are actually native of states like the Carolinas and Louisiana, but they aren’t invasive. They’ve rooted themselves here because of the shallow water and mud flats so similar to coastal plains on the Eastern Seaboard. The Nature Conservancy sought to protect these almost 83 acres on the western half of the lake in the late 1990s, acquiring it, then donating it to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources as a nature preserve. To reach the waters, we hike through a forest with its own tale. In 2001, a fierce tornado raked its tallest trees to the ground — among them, a roughly 200-year-old mammoth — leaving gaping holes and sunlight.Watch againVideo: Rare life floats at Chamberlain Lake“It broke out almost... Sterling Garden Club to present 'Language of Flowers'

First Church of Sterling. The public is welcome. Master storyteller Diane Edgecomb will be accompanied by Celtic harpist and vocalist Margot Chamberlain for the presentation. Their unique style of storytelling embodies the various characters and scenes in a tale, bringing each moment alive. Edgecomb is the recipient of the National Oracle Award for Storytelling Excellence and five Storytelling World Awards. This enchanting performance brings to life the legends that surround favorite garden flowers. The centerpiece of the performance is the Persian legend of the Nightingale and Rose, and their original adaptation of this exotic legend follows the journey of the rose through the ages, weaving together the heartfelt myths that surround it. Edgecomb’s humorous retelling of the Arthurian legend of Dame Ragnelle rounds out the program while answering the age old questions: What do women desire the most in the world? Expect to laugh, to be moved and to leave your cares behind. (The Landmark)
