Know Your Sumter: Downtown -- Sumter's oldest flower shop is ready for florists' 'Black Friday' - Sumter Item

With a love-filled holiday just around the corner, Sumter's oldest florist shop is prepared to take on the holiday rush and spread heartwarming messages in the form of bouquets. "My favorite thing about Valentine's Day is we get 'Florists' Black Friday,'" said store owner Janet Morlan. "We hire three delivery people, four designers are on staff, and we work that whole week ready for orders and walk-ins. The volumes of flowers we get is what excites me." Flowers and Baskets Florists, 29 W. Calhoun St., has been in Downtown Sumter for more than 75 years, according to Morlan. She and her husband, Richard Morlan, run the family owned and operated store together and have been prepping for florists' biggest day of the year. For Valentine's Day, Morlan is selling a special bouquet of daisies and carnations for $40 in pink and red tins with holiday-based designs. Sumter's Iris Festival events begin Thursday with Taste at the Gardens - Sumter Item

Sumter's Swan Lake-Iris Gardens has grown into what's known as a showplace of flowers and the home of all eight species of swan. It's also home to the longest continuously running festival in the Southeast with the Iris Festival. Since 1940, visitors from across the U.S. and many other countries have traveled to the Gamecock City for the festival to see - and buy - the thousands of Japanese irises growing along the banks of the lake and to participate in the wide variety of festival events. This year's festival will be held in the gardens during Memorial Day weekend - Friday, May 24, through Sunday, May 26 - for the 79th year, according to Lynn Kennedy, chairwoman of the Iris Festival Committee and events planner for the City of Sumter. The festival begins on the evening of Thursday, May 23, from 6 to 9 p.m., Kennedy said, with the official opening ceremony and the crowning of King and Queen Iris.
