Azalea Park: History in bloom | Community News -

Azalea Park will overflow in 84 years of history. It’s actually longer than that. According to our official history book of “Summerville,” ladies of the Civic League (forerunner of The Flowertown Garden Club) began planning the park project many years before the Great Depression. They raised money to purchase 16 acres lying between Magnolia Street and Central Avenue by holding ice cream suppers and cake sales.Mayor Grange S. Cuthbert, a flower lover who was born at Magnolia Plantation, used his floral and financial expertise to carve out our municipal gardens. He saw how plantation gardens were used to attract tourists and their dollars. So he used a WPA grant to pay laborers 10 cents an hour to convert “bramble into beauty.”Herbert L. Gnarled trees were wrested from their earthy sockets, drainage ditches scooped out, walkways laid and troublesome vines expelled.Once the swampy area was cleared out, the next question was “where did the flowers come from?” The answer – and the flowers, all 33,000 of them – came from George Segelken’s Summerville Floral Nursery. A pioneer in azalea propagation, he donated the flowers. He died in 1978 and three years later a per...

Cold temps may wipe out azaleas before Flowertown Festival

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCIV) — In a town known for its flowers, Summerville residents are a little worried the cold temps could wreak havoc on their blooms. One woman with a yard full of beautiful flowers may be the exception.Miss Janie’s yard is a sight to see. Her flowers in full bloom."That’s what's so beautiful in Summerville is when the azaleas are blooming and the wisteria and the dogwood,” Janie Banks said. The flowers bloomed early this year because of the warm winter, but freezing temps coming could be their demise."So many people come to Charleston to see the azaleas, and if they get burned back tomorrow night it's not going to be good," Thomas Legare, a local farmer, said.Thomas Legare's a farmer on John's Island. He says the unusual weather has affected more than the flowers."I talked to some friends of mine in the Upstate to see how they were doing. They're scared to death about their peach crops, because they're in full bloom right now and if the cold hits them -- they've already had snow in the Upstate, and if they get a freeze in tem...
