A Arrangement Florist moves to new space with new ownership

Day in early February.” Brown said the company empowers its local teams to lead each business as if it’s their own. After spending a day with the Spartanburg team, he said the decision to buy A Arrangement was simple because the employees cared so much about their customers and store. Brown said the A Arrangement in Greer still is owned by DeShazor, and Lone Star Bloom has expressed interest in purchasing it when DeShazor retires. “We are growing into the established floral shop arena by acquiring local shops with successful operations and history,” Brown said. “We focus on offering the prior owner a self-controlled exit and transition.” The process has allowed for a seamless change of ownership at A Arrangement in Spartanburg, for employees to keep their jobs and for customers to continue receiving the level of customer service they’ve grown accustomed to, he said. “We want the customers to know that the team is here, even after the transition,” Brown said. Lone Star Bloom recently purchased a 4,000-square-foot retail space at 231 E. Kennedy St. for A Arrangement. The building was formerly split up for businesses over the years, including Gerald's Candy and Nut Shoppe, Clyde Fitness, Crock Pot restaurant and Kennedy Street Florist. Ben Hines and Andy Hayes of Spartanburg-based Spencer/Hines Properties represented the estate of Gerald Tucker in the sale of the Kennedy Street building, listed for $199,000. “Our company is excited that we’re able to retain a retailer to stay in the downtown Spartanburg market,” Hines said. “We know that with A Arrangement’s reputation, they’re making a long-term commitment to the citizens of our community.” Andrew Babb of NAI Earle Furman is handling the sale of the now-vacant South Church Street building, which he said is under contract. ... Christmas poinsettias have ties to Mexico, Greenville

Story by Linda Cobb, From Spartanburg Magazine One of the most sought after holiday plants, is, of course, the poinsettia. For years, this beautiful plant has filled our homes during the holiday season. Traditionally, the poinsettia is red, but lately, the market is full of all colors of poinsettias. Before considering what colors are available, you might want to look into the history of the poinsettia. The origin of this plant is connected to our South Carolina heritage and falls close to home. The Latin name of the poinsettia is Euphorbia pulcherrima. The stems of the plant are full of a milky white substance that can irritate when it comes in contact with the skin. The Euphorbia family of plants is a large one and the poinsettia is related to one of the most popular plants in the gardening world today, Euphorbia characias, a beautiful Mediterranean plant that thrives in a hot climate. The colored bracts, often mistaken for flower petals but are really leaves, can be red, orange, cream, pink, green, or marble... (BlueRidgeNow.com)

Fire Chief Flowers shares holiday, seasonal safety reminders

Flowers said. There is a ban on outdoor burning in the city of Greer and Spartanburg and Greenville counties and Flowers emphasized the dangers. “People need to be cautious in how they discard of smoking materials,” Flowers said. “Winds can pick up and the dry ground can ignite fires.” A lit cigarette tossed out of a car window caused a grass fire that raged out of control in April 2014 that caused $1.7 million of damage that left four families displaced at Riverwood Farms. Arson is suspected in a majority of the Nantahala National Forest Fires in North Carolina, according to the U.S. Forest Service and incident command teams. A lightning strike started one fire and some were thought to be human-caused, such as campfires left unattended or cigarettes tossed without being completed extinguished. About 16 wildfires have burned nearly 46,000 acres, according to N.C. officials reports. Flowers mentioned that buyers of live Christmas trees need to be extra careful. “Once a tree is cut it is in the process of dying,” Flowers said. “Make sure the tree gets lots of water. Once a tree is dried out any spark will ignite a fire.” Frying turkeys have their own dangers, according to Flowers. “Be vigilant where you put the fryers. People will fry them outside but frying turkeys inside can cause big fires,” Flowers said. “Make sure you have something to put out the fires.” Beginning the holiday season, traditionally Thanksgiving week through the New Year, there is an “uptick in home fires,” Flowers said. Power outages lead to more probability of carbon monoxide poisoning. “The generators are taken out and unfortunately, while they should be outside, a lot of people move them into the house,” Flowers said. “Carbon monoxide is an odorless gas and invisible gas. It ... (GreerToday)
