Flower child still raising hell

Vietnam War. The girl in the famous photograph was Jan Rose Kasmir. She is today a 66-year-old massage therapist on Hilton Head Island. And she is still a hell raiser, though she prefers to say that by still standing up for her beliefs, she’s pointing people toward heaven. I sent her an email with three questions. This is her response. Are you still staring down guns? Eldridge Cleaver famously said, “If you’re not part of the solution you are part of the problem.” That is to say that I confront dragons and demons where I find them, I support waifs and widows where I find them. If a person is in need I try to respond to that and do what I can in my personal and professional life. As a massage therapist I try to help people with their physical and spiritual health. (I try to teach people that some ailments originate with the psyche, that is “tissues and issues,” and talk about ways to deal with their stress or spiritual distress in their lives.) I never let money stand between me and taking care of people. I have provided free massage for the Professional Tennis Registry wheelchair tennis tournament since the 1980s. I have also tried very hard to introduce massage in places that I know it will be highly beneficial, such as the new drug rehabilitation center and the senior rehabilitation facilities. Unfortunately, there are some places that are not enlight... (Island Packet (blog))

Lauderdale: RBC Heritage 2016 one for the records

RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing ended Sunday with Branden Grace of South Africa wearing the winner’s tartan jacket, the sun was smiling on Hilton Head Island. Many reasons can be cited for this tournament for the records. We’re at the right place where we should be as far as discussions go. David I. McKay, RBC chief executive Yes, there was the golf course that Pete Dye and Jack Nicklaus made famous with the help of Arnold Palmer. And, yes, the Harbour Town Golf Links have been rejuvenated by the owners of the hosting Sea Pines Resort, the Bill and Alice Tolley Goodwin family. There were teams of local workers and volunteers who nearly killed themselves making the hospitality look seamless. Perhaps the home crowd was buoyed by news from the opening ceremony that it will definitely all happen again next year with the current title sponsors. After the closing ceremonies, RBC president and CEO David I. McKay told me: “We’re signed through 2017, as you know, and I think we’re going through an orderly discussion about extending beyond that. We’re at the right place where we should be as far as discussions go, but nothing to announce as yet.” Tournament director Steve Wilmot said before the ceremony that several meetings wer... 'God, Me and a Cup of Tea': Rose Hill Mansion a story of renewal

Corinthians 5:17 (NKJV) One of the places we visited while on our weeklong getaway to Hilton Head Island last month was Rose Hill Mansion. Now, I realize all these Southern plantations come with a history, but Rose Hill’s fascinated me. Construction on the mansion began in the 1850s as a wedding present from a wealthy physician and planter and his wife to their daughter. When the Civil War broke out, work came to a standstill. How the place was spared from being burned to the ground by Union soldiers is still somewhat of a mystery. One story is that its structure resembled a church, and the enemy couldn’t bring themselves to destroy such a beautiful building. After the Civil War, the property changed hands a number of times, and work on the interior wasn’t completed until 1946, when its new owners “finished it in grand style” — nearly 100 years after construction first began. For many of those years, though, the house stood empty. In 1987 a devastating fire destroyed much of the mansion. For nearly a decade it sat — alone, abandoned, desolate, defenseless against heat and cold, sun and storm — until 1996, when a young couple visited the house and saw beyond the ruins. They purc...
