Roses & Raspberries: Flowers for those who help
Hurricane Harvey. We saw it when Hurricane Irma raked across Florida, inflicting pain and suffering. We saw it again when Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico.People are at their best when facing the worst situations. Bravo, and roses to everyone. The Thomas fire also has stretched thin the ability of local charities to get clothes and food to families during the holiday season. So, roses to everyone who can contribute to the Foodbank of Santa Barbara County, which is the central distributor to more than 300 charitable agencies countywide.Roses and a vigorous thumbs up to the Santa Maria Humane Society for thinking of their “guests” this holiday season. The Thomas fire has left many pets homeless, and a lot of them showed up at the Santa Maria Human Society facility, whose staff hopes to "clear the shelter" before Christmas by placing each of the shelter's cats and dogs into permanent homes. The shelter was full at mid-week, but you can become a dog or cat’s hero by visiting the shelter up until 3 p.m. Sunday, and take home a new friend without charge. The Humane Society has waived the usual adoption fees. What do you say to a trip to 1687 W. Stowell Road? Pick a pet — or two — and earn a roseAs a matter of fact, roses to every person who has helped make this very difficult holiday season on the Central Coast more enjoyable for folks affected by the Thomas fire, many of whom lost everything but their lives in the blaze. And a special bouquet to local organizations that have helped those helpers in their quest to improve the season for those who have suffered near-catastrophic losses. We are nearing the end of what has been a very trying year for so many Americans — and so many of our neighbors here on the Central Coast — but it is truly gratifying to know we always have each other’s backs. Valentine's Day 2017 Travel Ideas: 10 Romantic Getaways, Trips And Retreats For You And Your Special Someone
Biscayne Bay, and a decadent, four-course seafood menu with a bottle Veuve Clicquot. The package rate starts at $139.
A Helicopter Tour in Puerto Rico: For a more refreshing take on the standard evening or meal out on your Valentine’s Day retreat, book a helicopter tour – in Puerto Rico. The Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Beach Resort, just miles away from San Juan, is offering up a Love is Grand package deal. The helicopter tour offers guests sweeping views of the El Yunque Rain Forest for a day-time tour before a scheduled five-course dinner beachside.
A Honeymoon Getaway (Or Girl’s Getaway) to Hawaii: Don’t let the Aqua Kauai Beach Resort’s “Ultimate Kauai Honeymoon” package name fool you – this getaway deal is not just for newly wedded couples. The stay includes a room or suite, a five-day convertible car rental, daily buffet for two, an oceanfront massage and a romantic dinner. However, ladies can feel free to make a trip of it with a friend if they’d prefer a retreat or “Galentine’s Day” celebration.
A Coastal Retreat in Los Angeles: Terranea Resort’s sprawling seaside property is perfect for those who wish to celebrate in solitude without actually having to travel to a distant locale. Terranea has a variety of packages and date-night deals to select, from a two-night stay in luxury accommodations and spa treatments to a simple date night out for parents at the restaurant (parents can enjoy alone time after dropping kids at the Tide Pool Kids Club).
A Snowy Getaway at Jackson Hole: Head to the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort and hit the slopes. When you need a day off, rent a “fat bike” rental. Biking around the area will allow guests to check out gorgeous Wyoming landscape.
Museum-Hop in D.C.: For art, history or science enthusiasts, Washington, D.C., is a great – and unlikely – destination for a Valentine’s Day celebration. Couples can wander around the Smithsonian Institution’s 17 museums and galleries — the recently opened National Museum of African-American History and Culture is a must-see. The museum hosts free events and features an array of exhibits that highlight African-American art, historical artifacts, photographs and more.
