Washington Liquors Closes + Florists' Telegraph Delivery Blooms: The Florist You May Have Missed - hobokengirl.com

Washington Street. The photo was taken during Hoboken’s Centennial Parade. Florists’ Telegraph Delivery was founded in 1910 by John A. Valentine in Rochester, NY. The Hoboken store at 211 Washington may have opened in the late 1940s since the name ‘Interflora’ was first used. Interflora described the merging between the US, British, and European Telegraph lines. In 1933, Florists’ Telegraph Delivery entered their first float in the famous Rose Parade, an event held in Pasadena since 1890 by the Valley Hunt Club. Through the years, celebrities, such as Elizabeth Taylor and Rosemary Clooney, have been spokespersons for Florists’ Telegraph Delivery. Advertisements of the 1940s and 1950s depicted families and loved ones receiving flowers, usually accompanied by the slogan: “Say It With Flowers By Wire.” Their ‘Mercury Man’ logo became synonymous with sending flowers. Sometimes he was even depicted holding a bow and arrow like Cupid. In the 1960s the company changed its name to Florists’ Transworld Delivery to emphasize their global reach and modernization. Over 100 years later, Florists’ Telegraph Delivery continues to operate. There is a chance that you may have even purchased their flowers without knowing! Flowers Direct {UK}, Pro Flowers, Personal Creations, and others make up only a portion of their brand. Their headquarters is now in Downers Grove, Illinois, and was recently taken private after Nexus Capital Management acquired it. CoolVines, a Princeton-based wine shop, is moving into the space. Currently, CoolVines has 2 locations in Jersey City and one in downtown Newark. This will be their first shop in the Mile Square. The transition has allowed for a small piece of Hoboken’s history to emerge briefly before being covered up once more. Who knows when Interflora will bloom again! ...

Flowers of Hope campaign supports Alzheimer’s walk - MPNnow.com

Thousands of Flowers at George Eastman Museum in Rochester - Spectrum News

There's a place in Rochester where you can take a winter field trip indoors that can really help you "spring ahead." You have to see it and smell it to believe it. There are 14,000 flower bulbs in bloom at the George Eastman Museum for the annual Dutch Connection flower display. Dan Bellavia, Eastman Museum Landscape Manager, and a team of volunteers plant bulbs in more than 2,000 pots to display throughout the mansion. "Yes, it starts in June and we work pretty much year-round. Once we get the bulbs in we start potting them and when it starts to get cold they go into the greenhouses and then we display the show for you," said Bellavia. "In 1895 George Eastman took a bike trip to the Netherlands and that is when he saw the fields of all the tulips that were there and he wrote a letter back to his mother talking about it. Gardening: Classic Gomphrena remains popular after hundreds of years - The Detroit News

Fields’ were stunning additions to our orange and yellow stand of Bidens, Zinnia ‘Zahara’ and marigolds last summer in the OPC display garden in Rochester. A new selection, ‘Las Vegas Purple’, a vivid plum purple sporting small round flowers on a plant that has an upright growth habit, rising to 18 inches in height, is on my wish list. Though the flowers are relatively small and ball shaped, they attract attention because of their neon color. These and other Gomphrena are popular for use as cut flowers and are easily dried for use in wreaths and other everlasting arrangements that will last for years. New this season is a vegetative selection of Gomphrena, ‘Truffula Pink,’ from Proven Winners. It's a compact grower that produces bright pink flowers similar to the tall, bright pink see-through plant Gomphrena ‘Fireworks’ that also starred in the OPC display garden last season. Rising to 18 to 24 inches, it works well in garden plantings and containers and garnered rave reviews in trial gardens last year. Gomphrena thrive in full sun and hot weather and grow best in moist but well-drained soil. They don’t tolerate wet soil and are best watered at ground level.
