Christine Flowers: Catholic church is flawed, but still worth it

Sadly, it seems that the work is still necessary even as newspapers are gutted, given the news this week about the Altoona-Johnstown diocese, which is accused of having hidden its own sordid scandal. Let the spotlight shine on them, as well. But back to my original thought, which is that there has always been a bit of anti-Catholic bigotry among the intelligentsia in our country, and as we have become more secular, the bigotry has morphed into more of a “those Catholic folk and their backward ways are simply not progressive enough for evolved society.” Not every criticism of the church, or the Pope for that matter, is a wink-wink way of delegitimizing the faith and the faithful. The sex abuse scandal was real. The pope should not have waded into the Republican-Democratic politics. (Donald Trump is an idiot, but that’s not the business of the pope.) But the anti-Catholicism is there, and it is quite real, and it was most recently noted in the failure of President Obama to attend Antonin Scalia’s funeral. I’m not saying that the president was showing disrespect to Catholics. I’m saying that those who criticized him, like me, got a lot of blowback along the lines of “why would he go to that religious, anti-choice, woman-hating (expletive) funeral?” That, by the way, is an exact quote from an email. Advertisement All of this is to point out how important it is that we recognize the truly important, crucial role that the Catholic church has played in the lives of every American, of every faith. There is a need to reinforce the good that has been accomplished to balance out in some way the bad, the evil, the regrettable. And we in the De... (The Delaware County Daily Times)
