Belle Vernon Cemetery friends out to enrich Lynnwood facility

By Rick Bruni Jr. To preserve the rich history of the Belle Vernon Cemetery, its supervisor has formed a nonprofit fund for large-scale projects and improvements. Tom Hewitt helped create Friends of the Belle Vernon Cemetery, which will manage an account through which larger donations can be used to enhance the 150-year-old graveyard in Rostraver's Lynnwood section. “Over the years, people have donated money to the cemetery, but we had a few people come forward and donate around $1,000 to make the cemetery nicer,” Hewitt said. “They didn't want it to be just placing flowers every year on Grandma's grave. They wanted it to be used as an asset.” One of the first projects was the restoration of a bell clock bequeathed in 1985 by Gustav Massey in memory of his wife. “Back then it was front-line technology but now it's like an 8-track,” Hewitt said of the clock that once chimed several times per day. “We started having problems with it 10 years ago, then the timing piece went, and we finally just turned it off.” People began to donate, and the...
