He was practicing with a new Tokina 100mm macro lens and purposely focused on the sunlit yellow tulip while using a shallow depth of field (3.5 f-stop) to blur the red tulips. There was a slight breeze so he used a fast, 1/400th of a second shutter speed to keep it sharp.
