Obituary - Robert Eugene Butler - Fauquier Now

Robert Eugene Butler, 83, of Bealeton, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by family, on Friday, July 2, 2021. Born August 6, 1937, in Remington, “Gene” was a child with an adventurous spirit, who often found ways to escape, roam and dodge trouble. He loved playing baseball with his friends and would often reminisce about those games until his last days. Gene graduated from Remington High School and started living his life to the fullest. Service in the National Guard was followed by working at the U.S. Treasury, with weekends spent racing his unbeatable Ford at the track. He opened the Montgomery Ward store on Main Street in Warrenton, working day and night running the store and making deliveries. For a time he ran a car dealership, worked as a Realtor, then ran for Fauquier supervisor. He started Butler Fence, installing countless miles of fencing throughout the area. She also leaves several furry family members. Her father, Diven Eugene Gency, preceded her in death in May of 2017. Julia was a jack of all trades, she made the most delicious cupcakes and probably built the table that you were eating them at. She always made sure her yard was full of flowers, especially yellow ones, and loved growing fresh veggies and herbs when the weather was warm. She loved sitting on her porch in the sun when she couldn’t be at the beach and she loved a good book or puzzle. When she was in the kitchen making one of her many famous baked goods, she loved to listen to Elton John. Julia was always an active parent, she never missed a sporting event or concert and always pushed her children to be the best versions of themselves. She never stopped moving or creating and she could befriend anyone she met. She was the glue that held her family together. She may be gone, but her love will continue to spread through her family. Dona Gene Gardenhire, aged 98, passed away on March 10, 2021, where she was born June 29, 1922, in Rockwall, TX to William Eugene Eagle and Mabel Ruth (Spong) Eagle. Dona grew up in Rockwall and loved riding her horse to school. At one point, she lived with her family in the county jail, her father being a deputy sheriff. Dona worked in the county clerk's office before attending East Texas State Teachers College. Dona met and married Frank Jones Spelce, Jr. in 1942. The couple moved to Ft. Worth and began working at Consolidated/ General Dynamics/ Lockheed Martin (the Plant) until they retired almost 50 years later. During that time, they raised their daughter, Mary Carol, and enjoyed many wonderful family vacations together. When Frank passed, Dona moved back to Rockwall where she reconnected with childhood friend Dr. James Homer (Bud) Gardenhire whom she married in 1993. Dona and Bud traveled extensively until his passing seeking rare wildflowers to photograph. Dona was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church Rockwall and the Martha Sunday School Class, a proud member of the Rock Wall Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution, The Friday Study Club, Friends of the Library, and the Rockwall County Historical Foundation. Dona was classy, social, and hardworking, with a great love for her family and cared for some as they aged. She had several lifelong friends and never threw away a greeting card. On top of hoping that the text accurately tells the story of domestic terrorism and its complacent president, I hope there’s a part dedicated to Eugene Goodman. Eugene Goodman is the lone Black officer who faced the mob of predominantly white terrorists who stormed the Capitol in the name of Trump. Video showed him purposely leading the mob away from Senate chambers, having them pursue him upstairs. Rebecca Tan of The Washington Post wrote about Goodman, the article showing an analysis of the encounter between Goodman and the mob. The analysis, conducted by Professor Kirk D. Burkhalter (a former officer for the NYPD) goes into detail about how badly things could’ve escalated had it not been for Goodman’s quick thinking. For 85 tense seconds on Jan. 6, Goodman tried to hold back dozens of rioters, according to the video, twice retreating up a flight of stairs. Police experts say he wasn’t fleeing, but luring the mob away from the Senate chambers, where lawmakers were sheltering and armed officers — including one with a semiautomatic weapon — were securing the doors.
