Obituary: Richard E. Michaud Sr. - Press Herald

Gorda, Fla., on Jan. 10, 2020.Dick was born in Presque Isle, the son of the late Edmond and Catherine (Beaulieu) Michaud. He spent his childhood in Ashland, moving to the Greater Portland where he lived and worked until retiring and moving to Florida.Dick began his working career with Seltzer & Rydholm where he worked for eight years before progressing to a sales manager position for Circus Time, Inc, a Maine Potato Chip company. He remained there for 20-plus years before deciding to start his own business. It was in November of 1980, in a garage on Highland Avenue in Scarborough, that Dick along with his wife Sharon Michaud and his sons began Michaud Distributors. He started as a sub-distributor selling Wise Potato Chips. With Dick’s keen business sense, drive to succeed and loyalty to his customers, the business grew quickly. In 1982 they moved the business from his garage to a new building on Lincoln Street in South Portland. It was then he became a distributor for Tom’s Foods. They developed a strong business relationship which carried on for more than 16 years. Year-round need Since being formed in 1982, the Akron-Canton Foodbank has grown into a $40 million per-year operation, with more than $30 million of food and other items distributed last year. The agency works with a network of more than 500 food pantries, hot-meal sites, shelters and hunger-relief programs to distribute food for families in need. That includes more than 90 groups in Stark County. Other partners are located in Summit, Tuscarawas, Carroll, Holmes, Wayne, Portage and Medina counties. Surplus food and other essential items come in from around the country, Flowers said. The agency also collects food from more than 150 donors every week. Once collected, food is stored at the agency's warehouse in Akron until it can be distributed to partner organizations that pass it along to families in need. Most people helped by the food bank and its partners live above the federal poverty level, which means they aren't eligible for assistance from programs such as food stamps or free meals at schools, Flowers said. The food bank estimates that one in seven people, including one in five children, in its eight-county service area is affected by food insecurity, which refers to a U.S. Department of Agriculture measure of the lack of regular access to nutritional food for an active and healthy life. In Stark County, it's estimated that 53,880 people, or 14.4 percent of the population, are food insecure. That group includes 17,190 children. But in Santiago, Chile, where Joan Ewer Thorndike grew up, that’s an insult to the cook. So flowers are the gift of choice, and on many street corners there were stands selling inexpensive, beautiful blooms. Which was why Thorndike’s jaw dropped the first time she saw flowers for sale in San Francisco: $5 for a single flower. “I was absolutely stunned,” she said. “It made my head reel.” She realized American florists were focused on what she calls the “Hallmark holidays,” and put together giant arrangements for hotel and concert hall lobbies or “roundy-moundy” baskets with flower stems stuffed into foam. Sharing smiles and flowers: Ashland family pays it forward with special deliveries

ASHLAND – When Ryan Kellogg smiles, you can’t help but smile along with him. The 10-year-old Ashland County boy and his family are helping spread some smiles by spreading kindness. Ryan’s parents, Brian and Karen Kellogg, have spent most of their free time for the past several months on a special project they’ve named Ryan’s Sunflowers and Smiles. "Smiles and flowers," Ryan said when asked about his project. The Kelloggs, including Ryan's siblings, Sam, Madeline, Makenzie and Trevor, planted several fields of sunflowers and zinnias earlier this year. Week 4 Friday Night Lights football Heroes

Cowboys?  Davis kept hammering away last Friday until his Boys Town team came away with a wild 50-40 win over Ashland-Greenwood.   Davis was true on 13 of 19 passes for 234 yards and 5 TDs.  He also ran for 45 and 15 yard TDs and made 3 tackles on defense.     For the year, TJ Davis is 52 of 79 passing for 712 yards and 13 TDs with only 2 picks.  That is hitting his targets at a 68% clip boys and girls.      *Bryce Zimmerer-Creighton - Coach Gene Suhr rode this 5-9, 160 pound sophomore last Friday afternoon to the tune of 41 carries.  Zimmerer responded with 227 yards rushing and TD runs of 1 and 8 yards as the Bulldogs shocked the daylights out of West Holt, 56-14.   After being blown out by Neligh-Oakdale 72-44 in the season opener, Creighton has beaten West Boyd 76-0, then the West Holt blowout.  Zimmerer’s 3 game rushing total stands at 384 yards and 5 TDs.   This Creighton bunch looks like a State Championship team to me right now.  Remember, Neligh-Oakdale is not eligible for the Class D-1 playoffs this fall. *Ryan Neumann-Creighton - Neumann is the man that directs this potent Creighton attack and the key to a title run.  In that manhandling of West Holt, the 6-0, 180 pound senior hit on 12 of 15 passes for 186 yards and 4 touchdowns, all in the 1st half.  Tyler Stubben caught 2 of Neumann’s scoring tosses (42, 9 yards) while Tyler Lilly snared the remaining two TD receptions covering 10 and 8 yards.   This Neumann dude is athletic, mobile and very intelligent.   ***1000 Yard Passing Alert*** *AJ Hubner-Creighton Prep - Completed 20 of...
