Sep 7, 2020Zoning board OK's U-pick flower farm with historic barn turned wedding venue - The Star Press
Seth Slabaugh
Muncie Star PressPublished 7:00 AM EDT Sep 7, 2020OAKVILLE, Ind. — In 2016, Vick and Christa Conway were thinking about tearing down the 19th century horse barn behind their historic home in the country.Evidently built in 1863, the barn in southern Delaware County had fallen into disrepair and become a catchall for a variety of things. But their son Garrett wanted to save it and ended up doing a lot of the work to make it a suitable place for his high school graduation open house. It also became a hangout for him and other kids.Today, with the approval of a zoning variance by the Metropolitan Board of Zoning Appeals, the barn is being used as the retail store for the family's Barnside Bloom and Events business — a U-pick flower farm and rustic venue for weddings and other celebrations.Barnside Bloom is one of two variances authorized by the BZA this summer to allow event-venue businesses in barns. A variance for a third barn to become a wedding venue was denied; it was located in an area with closer neighbors than the other two barns.S...

Jul 6, 2018Flowers in the boulevards, parties in the street
Other cities that allow boulevard plantings include Cambridge, Guelph, Oakville, Oshawa, Whitby and Kelowna, B.C.
Interest in neighbourhood street parties is also booming, prompting councillors to approve a simpler process for such events.
The number of street parties held each in the city has doubled since the city last reviewed its street policies. In 1994, the city saw about 50 events in the street, including about 15 neighbourhood parties. Today, it sees about 100 events that close streets temporarily, including about 30 neighbourhood bashes.
The city will create a simple guide for how to hold street parties, simplify road closures, and pay for insurance for events of fewer than 200 people.
"I think it's a step in the right direction," said Coun. Kelly Galloway-Sealock. "I think this process will make things a lot clearer for people, and hopefully that translates into more parties."
The city has already made a number of changes flowing from the new neighbourhood strategy: increasing the number and size of grants for neighbourhood events or projects; creating guides to help residents set up neighbourhood markets, community gardens and local traffic calming; giving residents more say over how neighbourhood parks should be developed; and creating a website, lovemyhood.ca, with tips and ideas for community events.
Dec 28, 2016Tim Hortons #WarmWishes campaign surprises Canadians with more than 150 good deeds in one day
OAKVILLE, ON, Nov. 30, 2016 /CNW/ - Today, Tim Hortons released its annual #WarmWishes video, capturing the surprise and delight of more than 150 deserving Canadians from across the country. Unsuspecting Guests from six communities received kind wishes, nominated on their behalf by friends, family and neighbours during one day on November 16. Since the launch of the campaign three years ago, 2016 marks the biggest year yet for #WarmWishes, building upon last year's transformation of a restaurant in Grimsby, Ontario to a House of Warm Wishes. Requests as small, but meaningful, as delivering hot chocolate and Timbits® for nurses, raking leaves for a neighbour and giving flowers to a partner were submitted in the Cup of Good Deeds and fulfilled by Tim Hortons staff. Additional deeds like providing food and supplies to animal shelters, donating baby formula and diapers to a pregnancy centre, and delivering books to a school library, among many others, helped communities come together."We...
