Jan 12, 2017Finding the right plants for your micro climate
I’m going to recommend some plants that are growing in my garden as well as the Walnut Creek Pollinator Garden, which I manage, and the Markham Arboretum in Concord. All three places have their own unique micro climates, but these plants are thriving despite the chilly weather.
Verbena lilacina ‘De La Mina’ continues to produce minute fragrant lavender flowers despite the cold. This California native from the Cedros Islands in Baja is an evergreen perennial and, according to Theodore Payne’s Foundation website that specializes in native plants, Verbena can tolerate cold into the low 20s.
Helleborus species, also known as Hellebores, are quite adaptable and and the ones under the protection of my pine trees are in bloom. Coming from mountainous regions of Central Europe, they can withstand our low temperatures. In their native habitat they live on edges of woodlands in scrubby land at high altitudes. I plant them close to or under small trees, which gives them sun in the spring, partial shade in the summer and protection from frost in the winter.
Correa ‘Ivory Bells’ is blooming in full sun at Markham Arboretum. The genus, Correa, is endemic to Australia and consists of 11 species, but Correa ‘Ivory Bells’ has its roots in San Francisco. In the 1940s, plant breeder Victor Reiter Jr. crossed two varieties, Correa alba and Correa backhousina. ‘Ivory Bells’ is a winter bloomer that can withstand temperatures as low as 20-25 degrees. Caring for Correa is quite easy as it responds well to pruning, which can be done when it has finished blooming in the spring.
Penstemon will be happy growing in full sun. Penstemon heterophyllus, Penstemon centranthifolius and Penstemon specabilis growing along my driveway show no signs of stress. They love full sun and low water.
At the Pollinator Garden there are a few species of California native Eriogonum — Erigonum giganteum, Eriogonum fasciulatus, Eriogonum arborescens and Eriogonum grande rubescens. The plants thrive in dry conditions and bloom in the summer. One in particular, Erigonum nudam, is native to Contra Costa County.

Sultry Rose to waft from a blown glass bottle by David Colton and two taxidermied rooster diffusers by the artist Allis Markham (to get a sense of it, he touts his work as scents designed “for every dirty, pretty thing”). As far as his visual contribution, “Chuck’s finished pieces called for something more sensual, a bit darker, even exotic,” Buterbaugh adds. “Dahlias felt right.”“Chuck Moffit: With the Promise of Nectar” is on view Aug. 25 – Sept. 11, Eric Buterbaugh Gallery, 8271 Beverly Blvd, Los Angeles, artsy.net. Aug 15, 2016LIFE STORY: Markham's Lylia Jones remembered for her flowers, biscuits
From a small-town farm girl to great-grandmother of 14, Lylia Jones was go-getter.
The longtime Markham resident farmed vegetables, hauled water, sewed clothes, baked biscuits and grew African violets.
For more than 35 years, Lylia was a volunteer with the annual Markham Fair, winning a blue ribbon or two for her flowers, pickles, preserves and baking.
“I remember there being tables full of African violets,” said daughter and Gormley resident Phyllis Gray. “She loved them because they were beautiful.”
The Jones’ home was full of flowers and the sound of children.
The two-time breast cancer survivor, mother of nine and grandmother of 17 died earlier this year at the age of 94.
Lylia is predeceased by her husband, Gordon, son, Warren, daughter, Enda and grandsons, Bradley and Kirk Bell.
Lylia Miller moved to Toronto from her home on a farm near Elmvale when she was 18. And shortly after moving to the big city, she met Gordon Jones, who was transferred to Halifax, where he was stationed during the Second World War.
But it was never about keeping up with Jones’.

Jul 27, 2016Luscious flowers that climb and blossom in Fairbanks
Keep in mind that yellow clematis needs very good drainage. Siberian (C. macropetala), which includes the cultivars Blue Bird and Markham’s Pink, is another good choice for Fairbanks. Jackman clematis is a perennial in Southcentral and Southeast Alaska.
Cindy Tibbetts, owner of Hummingbird Farm Greenhouse that sells, “Clematis ... for the Frozen North,” recommends trying clematis cultivars belonging to the Kivistik (large flowered hybrids developed in Estonia) and Alpina group (C. alpina) for as cold as zone 3, the warmest Fairbanks zone indicated on the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Plant Hardiness Map. The coldest is zone 1. I just bought a Huvi clematis, which belongs to the Kivistik group, with big, gorgeous blue flowers. I planted it close to the house and hope it will survive the winter.
These won’t survive the winter outside, but if you’re looking for some beautiful houseplants, you might try fragrant jasmine, bizarre looking passion flower or proliferous bougainvillea.
For more information on which flowering vines and other flowers grow and survive in Fairbanks, see:
• Flower trials conducted in Fairbanks: www.georgeson botanicalgarden.org/ research-education/plant-trials.
• The newly revised “Alaska’s Sustainable Gardening Handbook” available soon from UAF Cooperative Extension Service: www. uaf.edu/ces.
Now that you’re enticed to grow these flowering vines, you have to find the plants. Some of them can be started from seed, but it’s easier and faster to start with a plant. If available, purchase them from a local greenhouse. Less common and more experimental varieties will probably need to be ordered from an Outside greenhouse.
Have you successfully grown a flowering vine in Fairbanks not listed here? Or one listed here unsuccessfully? Let me know!
