Holiday books, made-to-give gifts and DIY Christmas ornaments

Christmas Caramel Murder” by Joanne Fluke is a Hannah Swenson mystery with recipes. “Twelve Days of Christmas” by Debbie Macomber is a holiday romance. “Christmas Bells” by Jennifer Chiaverini chronicles the events of 1863, when Henry Wadsworth Longfellow’s family faced tragedy. “The Christmas Angel Project” by Melody Carlson is an inspirational story about a book club dealing with the death of a beloved member. Two fun Christmas events: This Saturday, Dec. 3, from 3 to 4:30 p.m., adults are invited to the first of three consecutive Saturday made-to-give sessions where you will create handmade gifts for someone special in your life. First is greeting cards, then stenciled gifts (pillows and tote bags) and finally winter blooming bulbs in mason jars. No registration is required. As well, kids in the fifth through 12th grades should save the date of next Thursday, Dec. 8, from 4 to 5:30 p.m. for a DIY holiday ornaments session where you will make a variety of festive decorations out of old books, beads and paper. Pagosa postcards We have some postcards with lovely Pagosa scene photos of downtown, the Springs area and the Pagosa skyrocket flower by Hannah R. Kuhn that would make good stocking stuffers at Christmas. We’re selling them in packages of 10 for $1 until supplies run out. Activities calendars  To be sure you don’t miss any of the free activities available to you and your families at your library — especially the special holiday events — we encourage you to pick up a copy of ... A senior and her garden

Min. wage reaction Minimum wages always bring with them a myriad of reactions from business owners. In Tuesday’s edition of the News, Sarah Comber did a great piece on local entrepreneurs’ reactions to the increased provincial minimum wage. All those interviewed seemed to consider the issue from an unbiased viewpoint, but admitted they expected struggles as a result of the change. And I don’t doubt that in the slightest. However, I remember on numerous occasions throughout the years, seeing business owners react in a similar way to multiple minimum wage increases. The one thing I do know to hold true is that additional costs will undoubtedly be transferred to the consumer. So the question is less about what the minimum wage will be, and more about whether everyone else will be seeing a raise, too (I guarantee the answer is no). So while low-income earners will get more, everyone else will simply struggle more. And that’s a real problem. bproulx@postmedia.com twitter.com/Ben_Proulx ... (Sherwood Park News)

Trevose flower show to have seashore theme

Submerged plant material becomes the note in a NGC Underwater design style titled "Message in a Bottle." In a NGC still life, "Beach Comber" features the relationship of shapes, forms and colors of found beach objects to each other. "California Sun," for novices only, encourages less experienced arrangers to express themselves with a color-dominate theme. The 5-inch miniature "Hook, Line and Sinker," displayed in a niche, challenges the designer to think big with small components. In the artistic craft class, "Surfin' Bird," the entrant must depict a shore bird using all natural plant material displayed within a shadow box. The horticultural schedule offers a variety of competitive classes for area green-thumbs, including annuals, perennials, bulbs, roses, evergreen and flowering branches and a collection of cut specimens. The "Annual Introductions" classes must include recently marketed varieties of flowers and vegetables offered in 2016. "Surf 'n Sun" is the theme of the special seed-grown challenge classes that include Burpee's Thousand Suns sunflower, Pinetree's potted plant of Dwarf Pacino Gold sunflower and a Sungold cherry tomato. Children can enter their seed-grown specimens of Pinetree's Sunspot sunflower in the "Water Baby" category. Entrants may also compete in sections for foliage and flowering container-grown plants, including combination planters and a newly added dish garden, as well as herbs, vegetables, fruits and nuts. Children aged 14 and under may compete in the Junior Division, which includes cut specimen classes in horticulture for vegetables, flowers, and herbs. A newly ... (Bucks County Courier Times)

Decor goes tropical this summer

Rattan also works as a foil for both bright and neutral hues. Pottery Barn’s Beachcomber collection includes sea grass, rattan and abaca fibers woven into chunky baskets. (www.potterybarn.com) A little rattan bar cart is part of Target’s summer Threshold collection. (www.target.com) For color beyond foliage green, consider sultry hues like orchid, banana and passion fruit. Go beachy with a palette of tans, creams and grays. Overstock.com has Tommy Bahama’s Tropical Hibiscus throw pillow and a chic white pineapple table lamp. Flamingo-printed sheets bring the theme into the bedroom, and the pink bird struts across a preppy-striped rug. Kate D. Spain, based in Bridgeport, Connecticut, has designed a woodblock print incorporating exotic blooms, leaves and vines. The limited edition artwork comes in ocean-y hues of turquoise, blue and violet. (www.shopkatespain.com) Antique scarf prints of tropical flowers and birds have been reproduced as canvas wall art at Pottery Barn. And Grandin Road has a set of four vintage-style parrot illustrations for wall art. (www.grandinroad.com) ... (West Hawaii Today)
