Arthur Hughes, former owner of Dearborn Farm Market, dies at 82 - Detroit Free Press

Hughes' youngest son, Patrick, was 13 when his father opened the Dearborn Farm Market in 1983. Before that, Hughes worked for the now-defunct Chatham Supermarket chain. He then decided to have his own business and opened the grocery store with business partner, Doug Hirvella. Patrick's first job was at the store, where he collected carts, checked egg cartons for cracks and took out the garbage. He said he had to "start at the bottom." "He was one of the toughest guys I've met," said Patrick. "Physically, mentally, he was a stickler for detail. But he was a softie, no doubt about it." Hughes' "soft" side came out when he was giving back to the community. He would help out regularly with the Dearborn Fire Department's Burn Drive, donating 10,000 to 12,000 ears of corn and delivering all the pumpkins for the event in person. In addition, he contributed to the Special Olympics, Dearborn Schools and local churches. "Whether it was donating things, helping out logistics; it was an endless stream of compassion that always came from him," said Patrick. "He felt it was his responsibility to do that." One of Patrick's favorite memories of his father was when he would host a fundraiser at the store every Labor Day weekend in conjunction with the annual Muscular Dystrophy Association telethon hosted by comedian Jerry Lewis. The event would feature hot dogs, a clown, music and balloon for the kids. "It was like a big carnival-like atmosphere," he said. "My dad would have a bullhorn and he would be walking around, drumming up like he was the carnival runner. He would try to drum up support for people to get involved in the raffle and it was just a weekend event of fun." Patrick said about 10 years ago, Whitmore-Bolles Elementary in Dearborn held an assembly, titled, "Art Appreciation Day." "My dad was the focus of that," he said. Jersey's Ben Flowers runs away from field, Panthers advance to sectional

Saturday's Decatur MacArthur Sectional with a fifth-place team finish; Civic Memorial also moved on to MacArthur with a sixth-place team finish. Chatham Glenwood took the team title with 41 points, followed by Taylorville (67), Springfield (76), the host Crimsons (126), the Panthers (140) and Eagles (145) to round out the advancing teams. Springfield Sacred Heart-Griffin (147), Rochester (207) and Springfield Lanphier (229) were eliminated as teams, though three runners from SHG advanced as individuals, along with a runner from Lanphier and a runner from Rochester. Class 2A state meet next Saturday at Detweiller Park in Peoria by MacArthur Sectional qualifiers Danville (105), Chatham Glenwood (112), Springfield (132) and Charleston (187). Jersey placed 13th in the 18-team field with 311 points. Civic Memorial was 17th with 409 points. Edwardsville Class 3A Sectional – The host Tigers earned their 28th state appearance with a third-place finish at SIUE. Minooka won the sectional with 89 points, with O’Fallon (96), Edwardsville (103), Lincoln-Way East (111) and Yorkville (129) also earning state trips. Minooka senior Soren Knudsen won the race in 15:48. Edwardsville was led by junior Franky Romano’s fourth-place run in 16:13. Also scoring for the Tigers were sophomore Roland Prenzler (15th in 16:36), freshman Jack Pifer (19th in 16:47), sophomore Dan Powell (24rd in 16:53) and sophomore Max Hartmann (45th in 17:15). Chatham Author Ventresca's New Novel "Black Flowers, White Lies" Now Available

CHATHAM, NJ - There was one meeting of the Chatham Rolling Hill Association Book Club where Yvonne Ventresca must have sounded like the know-it-all on the book being discussed, Pandemic. The other members of the club didn't mind that Ventresca did a lot of the talking because she didn't just read the book, she wrote it. Although Pandemic is categorized as a "Young Adult" novel, it was of interest to the book club members because they knew the author and also because the fictional setting was based on Chatham and the surrounding area.
