Spring blooms at Attleboro museum's flower show | Local News - The Sun Chronicle

New aspects of the show were petting zoos and educational programs from Enchanted Animals of Groton, Animal Adventures of Bolton, and Rain Forest Reptiles of Beverly, which were sponsored by the Attleboro Rotary.Another new feature, set up in the museum’s basement, featured six displays by “sugar artists” — sculptures of nature and animals that were also edible. One sugar sculpture titled “Lost Crown of the Fairy Queen,” by Evelyn Herman of North Easton, featured a tree stump adorned with butterflies, flowers and small toadstools — all created from gumpaste, modeling chocolate, fondant, edible petal dust and gold, with cast sugar butterflies.“Isn’t that incredible,” said one patron who was admiring the various sugar art pieces on display at the museum. In the gallery, the scent of flowers permeated the air as wide-eyed patrons took their time admiring the various landscape booths and other artwork.Collette Brough, 9, of Attleboro, was busy with her mother’s cell phone, taking photo after photo of some of the landscape artistry, such as “Garden of Eden” by Nolan’s Flowers & Gifts and “Secret Garden” by Oracle Landscaping and Lindsey Epstein Pottery.“We’re just blown away by the flower displays,” said Collette’s mother, Suzanne Brough. “This year in particular, they’re really stellar.”The Brough’s pick of the Flower Show was “Camelot,” created by Flowers By The Station, which featured a setup of Merlin’s workshop — and a mannequin of Merlin himself — with a suit of armor standing outside the display.Suzanne Brough was amazed by the structure of Merlin’s workshop, which had been constructed as an actual room.“You usually don’t see that here,” Brough said of the display. “It’s amazing.”Among the other prominent landscape booths were Helping Hands Florist’s “Oz,” complete with a Dorothy mannequin, a rainbow made from carnations, and a yellow brick road of sunflowers; “Fountain of Youth” by Briggs Nursery, with an actual fountain in the center, and “Muir Woods” by Rosebud Florist, featuring several m...

They created the Uber of flower delivery. Then disaster struck. Could they find redemption?

FTD did not respond to requests for comment.Linda Bolton Weiser, a senior analyst for financial services firm D.A. Davidson who follows the floral industry, is skeptical of the ability of a small start-up like UrbanStems to take on established players like 1-800-Flowers and FTD. “These little companies come in and out over the years,” she says, “and they all have a solution to a different thing.” But the industry has especially thin profit margins, buoyed by holidays like Valentine’s and Mother’s Day, she explains. As such, companies like 1-800-Flowers have pivoted to selling a large portfolio of gift items, not just flowers.Undaunted, Kori and Sheely set out to disrupt the middleman-laden industry by buying their own stems from farms in South and Central America, designing their own bouquets, and hiring delivery couriers as salaried employees. This approach was tested on the company’s first Valentine’s Day in 2014. Two days earlier, a storm had dumped six inches of snow onto Washington, rendering the roads treacherous and prompting changes to many delivery destinations, as offices closed for snow days. The co-founders and some friends took to...

New MP forced to defend spending on travel and flowers

RTI documents, but it was defeated after a vote, despite Greens MP Michael Berkman and independent Sandy Bolton supporting the opposition, due to Labor's majority.Education Minister Grace Grace accused the LNP of trying to "besmirch" the character of Ms McMillan, and "throwing mud"."Get over it - she won the election," Ms Grace said.Ms Grace said she did not get personally involved in the work of RTI officers."What happens is there are independent people who look at this. And they are the ones who make the decisions and until that is finalised, I'm not going to release any papers that I don't know about that are part of an issue to be looked at," she said.LNP leader Deb Frecklington said the opposition had asked about the ethical standards unit."[Ms McMillan] came into the house today and she started talking about the Queensland Audit Office, so obviously the opposition now has more questions than answers," she said. But Deputy Premier Jackie Trad accused the LNP of "muckraking"."Those documents are to be released by the independent Right to Information officer, not a politician," she said.Earlier, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she was unaware of the allegations.Comments disabledFelicity Caldwell is state political reporter at the Brisbane TimesMorning & Afternoon NewsletterDelivered Mon–Fri.

On Wednesday, Oct. 19, unsuspecting citizens around Cleveland were surprised to each be gifted with two bouquets of roses -- one to keep and one to give away to a person of their choosing. The flower giveaway was part of Petal It Forward, a national campaign that began in New York City as of way of spreading goodwill and happiness. This year marked the first time to participate in Petal It Forward for Va Va Bloom, which has floral shops in Cleveland and Kingwood. "It began last year as an initiative by the Society of American Florists," said Va Va Bloom Co-owner Wallace Bennett. "They only did it in New York and they had a tremendous response, so this year they engaged florists across 40 cities." Employees of Va Va Bloom created a total of 800 bouquets. Once the bouquets were loaded into vehicles, the flower shop employees set off on their mission to brighten the lives of 400 people. "It was just so wonderful. I went to the laundromat, the car washes and other places, including the nursing home. The reaction was overwhelming. People got tears in their eyes," said Co-Owner Lorna Davis. "I foun... Back to Basics – Low Maintenance Flower Garden Care

June to encourage compact growth. Eliminate floppy growth and the need for staking on late bloomers like Boltonia, Autumn Joy sedum, Russian sage and Heliopsis Revive catmint and perennial salvia that flop open in the center with pruning. Cut flopping plants back halfway once or twice a season as needed. And don’t forget to mulch. Covering the soil surface with an inch or two of shredded leaves, evergreen needles/pine straw or other organic material will conserve moisture, suppress weeds and improve the soil as they decompose. Always water new plantings often enough to keep the top few inches of soil moist.  Once established water thoroughly and only as needed. This encourages drought tolerant roots, so you’ll need to do less watering in the future. With proper planning, plant selection and soil preparation you can keep your ongoing care to a minimum. That means more time to relax and enjoy your beautiful garden.
