Flowering native plants add color naturally - Woodstock Independent

It also gives you an idea of what the shrub can be used for: barrier, border, foundation, hedge, naturalizing, or as a screen. It is always a good idea to put the “right plant in the right place,” as I have learned from experience, instead of having to move it later. If you are attracted to the idea of gardening with native plants, the Wildflower Preservation and Propagation Committee can help. It is a 501(c)(3) organizations, and since 2005 it has helped more than 225 homeowners design native plant gardens through a mentoring program. Visit the website thewppc.org and look under programs for garden mentoring. There you can read more about the program and download an application that needs to be returned by Aug. 25. The University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener Help Desk in Woodstock is closed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Gardening questions can still be left as a voice mail at 815-338-3737 or submitted online at uiemg-mchenry@illinois.edu. Members of McHenry County Master Gardeners are volunteers trained by U of I educators to provide a network of gardening programs and activities to the public, including research-based, unbiased home-gardening advice. Nancy Shevel, a U of I Extension Master Gardener in McHenry County, writes a regular column on gardening for The Independent. ...

Winter Flower Bomb Looks to Highlight Everett Square Bus Stop - Everett Independent

Flower Bomb is because flowers are a universal sign of giving and crosses all barriers – whether class, politics or language,” said Gill. “No matter what, we can all speak with the language of flowers. We thank the mayor and how much he has already done. Now we can bring something exciting to public transportation. It’s good to do something celebratory with BRT. It’s not only the metrics. Any time we can improve the experience for bus riders, it’s a good thing. “There are only so many times you can go to the public and talk about BRT before it becomes boring,” he continued. “ Now we have an opportunity to talk about level boarding and other BRT concepts with an interesting frame – flowers.” The event on Wednesday, Dec. 18, will take place at 11 a.m. in Everett Square. ...

Brooklyn Botanic Garden has a new selfie spot (and some new plants too) - Brooklyn Daily Eagle

Campaign and the Campaign for the Next Century, which launched in 2007. Before the hillside was landscaped, it was “an orphan site” and a barrier between the upper and lower parts of Brooklyn Botanic Garden, said Michael Manfredi, co-founder of design firm Weiss/Manfredi, which designed the 1.25-acre landscape. Because BBG is an urban garden, it was important to include “social settings” in the landscaping, such as pathways wide enough for several people to walk side by side, Manfredi said. Weiss/Manfredi also designed the award-winning Diane H. and Joseph S. Steinberg Visitor Center, which stands next to the Robert W. Wilson Overlook. Architects Michael Manfredi, left, and Marion Weiss of Weiss/Manfredi designed the Robert W. Wilson Overlook. Eagle photo by Paul Frangipane There’s a meadow growing on the roof of the visitor center and a meadow in the Native Flora Garden Extension, which is on the opposite side of the overlook. So when Toby Wolf of Wolf Landscape Architecture selected plants for the overlook, he tried to create a meadow that complements the two on either side of it, he told the Brooklyn Eagle. The overlook project’s planting designer variegated the plants on the overlook rather than clustering them in big blocks. The hill faces south, so Wolf included coastal plants and native plants of the South and the Southwest, which can handle lots of sunlight. The overlook plantings will start flowering next year. img class="size-full wp-image-91111" src="https://brookly...

Bowery Flowers — The Green Spark Behind NYC's 1980s Bicycle Revival - Streetsblog New York

As I wrote in Bicycle Uprising, the Midtown bike ban telescoped years’ worth of livable-streets organizing into weeks. TA’s volunteer base tripled and tripled again with writers, artists and layout designers who infused City Cyclist with verve and polish. Carl was less at the center but still present. One evening, as I was readying my chart of NYPD crash stats — numbers that we hoped could dispel cyclists’ bad rap as pedestrians’ menacers — he softly suggested changing my wonky heading, “NYC Traffic Accidents,” to the far more telling “Who’s Really Getting Hurt?” That was Carl: don’t correct, suggest. Don’t twist the arm, just twinkle the eye. And cut to the chase. In a few years both of us would rotate off the Trans Alt board. Carl went first, explaining that he had nothing left to teach me. That may have been the finest compliment I would ever get, until some years later, when the mail brought Carl’s first book of poetry, Bowery Flowers, I saw this (“o chief lark of man” is my name anagrammed): The front cover of “Bowery Flowers,” a book of poems by Carl Hultberg. o chief lark of man green from the beginning subtle calculator of change modest through accomplishment urban bike rider now not so strange foresaw the slippery social shifts crunching energy creating lanes taking out the avenue with bikers e...
